Product details

Features

Three models included

The EMF/EMR Series includes three models for price and door closer feature/function considerations. The TS93 in Contur Design, with the extra efficient cam and roller technology, can be used on larger doors, while the 8900 rack and pinion closer offers a narrow projection for less cost. When value engineering is a concern, the 8600 meets the need.

Patented hold open design

The EMF/EMR Series’ patented hold open design prevents damage to the door, frame, holder/release device, or other installed hardware. This design enables initial hold while allowing the door to be manually opened beyond the hold open point.

Compatibility and wiring

The EMF/EMR Series is compatible with new or existing fire/smoke control systems and can be wired for concealed or surface wiring.

Door shuts in case of an alarm state or power failure

In the case of an alarm state signaled by the central control system or main power failure, current to the electromagnetic hold open device is interrupted, thus allowing the door closing mechanism to take over and shut the door.

Dormakaba 8956-EMF-TDE-RH-689 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the DORMA 8956 EMF/TDE actually do on a fire door opening?
It is a surface-mounted door closer with an electromagnetic hold-open built into the track. The magnet holds the door open under normal conditions; when the fire/smoke control panel signals an alarm or main power drops, current to the hold-open is interrupted and the closer takes over and shuts the door. The 8956 EMF/TDE ships without a detector, so it has to be wired to a fire alarm or smoke control system to release.
2) Do I need a separate smoke detector with the 8956 EMF/TDE, or is one built in?
No detector is included with the 8956 EMF/TDE. It is the EMF unit, which takes its release signal from a new or existing fire/smoke control system. If you need a self-contained unit with its own sensor, that is the EMR version, which incorporates a photoelectric detector and can control one EMF unit for the second leaf of a pair.
3) Will this work on a double egress pair, where the two leaves swing opposite ways?
That is exactly what the 8956 EMF/TDE is built for. It is configured for double egress mounting on the pull side of the door. For a standard pair swinging the same direction, or for push side mounting, you want a different mounting configuration in the 8900 EMF family.
4) Is the 8956 EMF/TDE handed, and how do I order the right one?
Handing matters here. Each unit is ordered left hand or right hand, and on a double egress pair you will typically need one of each. Determine handing at the opening before you order, because a left hand unit will not mount correctly on a right hand leaf.
5) What is the difference between the DORMA 8956 EMF/TDE and the Cal-Royal CR441EHO hold-open track closer?
Both are Grade 1 closers with an electric hold-open track arm, so both can release a door on a signal and let the closer shut it. The DORMA 8956 EMF/TDE is configured specifically for double egress pairs and mounts on the pull side, with a cam and roller track and a closer size range of 5 to 6 for heavy duty commercial openings. The Cal-Royal CR441EHO is described as a Grade 1 door closer with an electronic hold-open track arm without that double egress configuration, so for a double egress frame the 8956 EMF/TDE is the one that matches the opening.
6) Is the 8956 EMF/TDE strong enough for a heavy corridor or stairwell door?
It is a heavy duty, Grade 1 commercial unit with a closer size range of 5 to 6, which covers wide and heavy doors rather than light interior ones. It is not rated for residential use.
7) Can I run the wiring for this holder/release on the surface, or does it have to be concealed in the frame?
Either. The EMF/EMR units can be wired for concealed or surface wiring, so you are not forced to core the frame on a retrofit into an existing building.
8) What happens if someone forces the door past the hold-open point while the magnet is engaged?
The patented hold-open design allows the door to be pulled manually beyond the hold-open point without damaging the door, frame, holder/release, or adjacent hardware. That matters in traffic areas where a held-open door gets pushed further by a cart or a person.
9) What else could I use instead of the DORMA 8956 EMF/TDE for an electric hold-open closer?
The Cal-Royal CR441EHO is a Grade 1 door closer with an electronic hold-open track arm, so it covers the same basic job of holding a door open and releasing it electrically. The difference is in configuration: the DORMA 8956 EMF/TDE is specifically set up for pull side mounting on a double egress pair and is ordered handed. If your opening is a standard single swing, the Cal-Royal is worth looking at.
10) Can I add the 8956 EMF/TDE to a fire alarm system that is already installed?
Yes. The EMF/EMR units interface with new or existing fire and smoke control systems, so they can be tied into a panel that is already in the building rather than requiring a new system. Wiring can run surface or concealed.
11) Does the Cal-Royal CR441EHO include a smoke detector like the DORMA EMR units?
The Cal-Royal CR441EHO is listed as a Grade 1 door closer with an electronic hold-open track arm, with no integral detector named. The DORMA 8956 EMF/TDE likewise ships without a detector and is wired to a fire/smoke control system; within the DORMA EMF/EMR family it is the EMR version that carries the photoelectric detector, and one EMR unit can control an EMF unit on a pair of doors. If you need self-contained smoke detection at the door, the detector-equipped EMR model is the one to specify.
12) What finishes does the 8956 EMF/TDE come in?
Six finishes, each available in left or right hand: 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze, 691 light bronze, 693 black, 695 dark bronze, and 696 satin brass. If you are matching existing closers down a corridor, 689 aluminum and 690 dark bronze are the two most commonly specified on commercial openings.
13) What kind of track arm does the 8956 EMF/TDE use?
A cam and roller track. Cam and roller operation gives a lighter feel on the initial push compared with a rack and pinion slide arm, which is why it is used on the larger, heavier openings this size 5 to 6 unit is meant for.
