Product details

Features

Three models included

The EMF/EMR Series includes three models for price and door closer feature/function considerations. The TS93 in Contur Design, with the extra efficient cam and roller technology, can be used on larger doors, while the 8900 rack and pinion closer offers a narrow projection for less cost. When value engineering is a concern, the 8600 meets the need.

Patented hold open design

The EMF/EMR Series’ patented hold open design prevents damage to the door, frame, holder/release device, or other installed hardware. This design enables initial hold while allowing the door to be manually opened beyond the hold open point.

Compatibility and wiring

The EMF/EMR Series is compatible with new or existing fire/smoke control systems and can be wired for concealed or surface wiring.

Door shuts in case of an alarm state or power failure

In the case of an alarm state signaled by the central control system or main power failure, current to the electromagnetic hold open device is interrupted, thus allowing the door closing mechanism to take over and shut the door.

Dormakaba 8656-EMF-TDE-RH-689 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the DORMA 8656 EMF/TDE actually do on a fire or smoke door?
The 8656 EMF/TDE is a surface-mounted door closer with an electromagnetic hold-open built into its track. It holds the door open under normal conditions and releases it when the fire/smoke control system signals an alarm or when main power drops. Once current to the magnet is interrupted, the closer takes over and shuts the door. The TDE version ships without an integral photoelectric detector, so it has to be wired to a detector or a central alarm panel to get its release signal.
2) Is the 8656 EMF/TDE right for a double egress frame, or do I need the standard model?
Double egress is exactly what this one is built for. The 8656 EMF/TDE is configured for double egress mounting on the pull side of the door, which is the arrangement where the two leaves of a cross-corridor opening swing opposite ways in a common frame. On a standard single-swing opening you want the regular pull side or push side version of the 8600 EMF instead, not the double egress configuration.
3) Do I have to order the electromagnetic hold open closer by hand?
Yes, handing has to be specified. The 8656 EMF/TDE is a handed device and is ordered as either Left Hand or Right Hand. On a double egress pair, each leaf takes the hand that matches its swing, so a full opening usually means one of each.
4) Is this Dormakaba holder/release a Grade 1 device for a hospital or school corridor?
Grade 1, heavy duty, and commercial rated, and the holder/release devices in the series are ANSI/BHMA certified. That is the grade institutional specs normally call for on cross-corridor smoke doors in healthcare and education facilities.
5) What is the difference between the EMF and the EMR version of the DORMA 8600 series?
The EMR carries an integral photoelectric smoke detector on the unit itself, so it can release locally or be tied into a central alarm panel. The EMF is the hold-open unit without the detector, so it takes its release signal from elsewhere. One EMR can control one EMF unit, which is how a pair of doors is normally handled: detector on one leaf, EMF on the other. The 8656 EMF/TDE is the no-detector unit.
6) Can I tie this into the fire alarm system that is already in the building?
Yes. The EMF/EMR Series interfaces with new or existing fire/smoke control systems, and it can be wired either concealed through the frame or surface run, so a retrofit into an existing panel does not force you to open up finished walls.
7) Is the DORMA 8656 EMF/TDE an ADA compliant closer?
No. The 8656 EMF/TDE is not ADA compliant. It is a size 5 to 6 heavy duty closer, and that spring power is above what an accessible opening force allows. On a door that has to meet accessible opening force, use a lower-powered or adjustable closer, or an operator, rather than this unit.
8) What is an alternative to the DORMA 8656 EMF/TDE if the opening is a standard single door rather than double egress?
The DORMA 8656 EMF/TDE is built specifically for double egress mounting on the pull side, with a cam and roller track and an electromagnetic holder/release that drops the door on alarm or power failure. For a conventional single opening, the Cal-Royal CR441EHO is a Grade 1 door closer with an electronic hold-open track arm, which provides the same hold-open-until-signal behavior without the double egress mounting arrangement. Both carry a Grade 1 rating, so the deciding factor is the door configuration: double egress frames need the 8656 EMF/TDE geometry.
9) Is the Cal-Royal CR441EHO a direct replacement for a DORMA 8656 EMF/TDE?
Not a one-for-one swap. The Cal-Royal CR441EHO is a Grade 1 closer with an electronic hold-open track arm, so it covers the same general function of holding a door open until a signal releases it. The DORMA 8656 EMF/TDE is configured for double egress, pull side installation and is handed left or right, and it is supplied without a detector so it takes its release signal from a new or existing fire/smoke control system. Verify the frame configuration and the signal source before treating the CR441EHO as an equivalent.
10) What happens if someone pushes the door past the hold open point?
Nothing breaks. The patented hold open design on the EMF/EMR Series lets the door be manually pushed beyond the hold open point without damaging the door, the frame, the holder/release, or other hardware on the opening. That matters in a corridor where carts and beds get shoved through held-open doors all day.
11) What else could I use if I just need a Grade 1 closer with an electric hold open track?
The Cal-Royal CR441EHO is another Grade 1 door closer with an electronic hold-open track arm, so it covers the same basic function of holding a door open electrically and releasing it on signal. The Dormakaba 8656 EMF/TDE is the one to stay with when the opening is a double egress frame and the closer is being mounted pull side, since that configuration is what it is built for.
12) For a heavy traffic corridor door, how does the DORMA 8656 EMF/TDE compare with the Cal-Royal CR441EHO on rating?
Both are Grade 1 devices. The DORMA 8656 EMF/TDE is a heavy duty commercial unit with closer sizing covering 5 to 6, giving it the spring power for wide or heavy corridor leaves, and it uses a cam and roller track. The Cal-Royal CR441EHO is likewise a Grade 1 closer using an electronic hold-open track arm. If the corridor uses double egress leaves, the 8656 EMF/TDE is the one built for that frame.
13) What finishes does the DORMA 8656 EMF/TDE track closer come in?
Six finishes, each available in both hands: 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze, 691 light bronze, 693 black, 695 dark bronze, and 696 satin brass. 689 aluminum and 693 black are the usual picks when you are matching the rest of a painted corridor frame package.
