Product details

Features

Three models included

The EMF/EMR Series includes three models for price and door closer feature/function considerations. The TS93 in Contur Design, with the extra efficient cam and roller technology, can be used on larger doors, while the 8900 rack and pinion closer offers a narrow projection for less cost. When value engineering is a concern, the 8600 meets the need.

Patented hold open design

The EMF/EMR Series’ patented hold open design prevents damage to the door, frame, holder/release device, or other installed hardware. This design enables initial hold while allowing the door to be manually opened beyond the hold open point.

Compatibility and wiring

The EMF/EMR Series is compatible with new or existing fire/smoke control systems and can be wired for concealed or surface wiring.

Door shuts in case of an alarm state or power failure

In the case of an alarm state signaled by the central control system or main power failure, current to the electromagnetic hold open device is interrupted, thus allowing the door closing mechanism to take over and shut the door.

Dormakaba TS9315-EMF-PT-695 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the DORMA TS9315 EMF/PT do, and does it need a smoke detector on the door?
The TS9315 EMF/PT is a door closer with an electromagnetic hold-open track built in. It holds the door open and releases it on a signal from a fire or smoke control system, so it has no detector of its own. If you need the detection at the door itself, you want the EMR version, which carries a photoelectric detector; a single EMR can control one EMF unit for a pair of doors. Wire the EMF into a new or existing fire/smoke control system, either concealed or surface run.
2) What happens to the door if the power goes out on a DORMA EMF hold-open closer?
Power loss closes the door. On an alarm state from the central control panel or a main power failure, current to the electromagnet is cut and the closer mechanism takes over and shuts the door. That is fail-safe behavior, which is what a life safety opening needs, but it also means a utility outage drops every held door in the building. Plan for that if you are holding corridor or stair doors open through the workday.
3) Does the TS9315 EMF mount on the push side or the pull side of the door?
Push side only. The TS9315 EMF/PT is a surface-mounted push side application, so the closer body and track sit on the side the door swings away from. If your only available mounting face is the pull side, this is the wrong configuration for that opening.
4) Is the DORMA TS9315 EMF adjustable for a heavy exterior door or a wide corridor door?
The closer covers sizes 1 through 5, so it can be adjusted from a light interior door up through a large, heavy leaf. It is a heavy duty, Grade 1 commercial unit, and the TS93 closer body uses cam and roller technology rather than a rack and pinion, which is why the family puts this model on the larger doors.
5) Can I tie a DORMA EMF holder release into the fire alarm panel that is already in the building?
Yes. The EMF/EMR Series interfaces with new or existing fire and smoke control systems, so a retrofit into an existing panel is a normal application rather than a special order. Wiring can be run concealed through the frame or surface run, whichever the existing conditions allow.
6) Does the DORMA TS9315 EMF meet ADA opening force requirements?
No. The TS9315 EMF is not ADA compliant, so it should not be specified where the opening has to meet ADA opening force. Use it where hold-open and alarm release is the governing requirement, and specify a different closer or a power operator on openings that have to satisfy an accessibility path.
7) What is a Grade 1 alternative to the DORMA TS9315 EMF/PT if I need a closer with an electronic hold-open track arm?
The Cal-Royal CR441EHO is a Grade 1 door closer with an electronic hold-open track arm, the same core concept as the DORMA TS9315 EMF/PT, which is a Grade 1 heavy duty electromagnetic holder/release track closer. Both carry a Grade 1 rating, so either can be specified where a facility standard calls for Grade 1 closers on fire and smoke barrier openings. The TS9315 EMF/PT is non-handed and mounts on the push side with a rack and pinion track, and its magnet releases the door on an alarm signal or a loss of power so the closing mechanism shuts the opening.
8) If the opening needs a pull side mount, is the DORMA TS9315 EMF/PT still the right closer?
No. The DORMA TS9315 EMF/PT is a push side, surface-mount track closer, so it suits an opening where the arm and track land on the push face. For a pull side application, specify the corresponding pull side model in the TS9300 EMF family rather than adapting this one. The Cal-Royal CR441EHO is another Grade 1 closer with an electronic hold-open track arm to weigh for the same hold-and-release duty. In all cases the arm side is set by the door swing and the available frame face, not by the closer itself, and the TS9315 EMF/PT body is non-handed.
9) Do I have to order the DORMA TS9315 EMF handed for a left or right door?
No handing to specify. The TS9315 EMF is non-handed, so one unit covers left and right hand openings, and a property manager standardizing across a floor can stock a single part number instead of pairs. You still pick your finish at time of order.
10) Will the door still open if someone pushes past the hold-open point on a DORMA EMF track closer?
Yes, and that is the point of the patented hold open design. The magnet holds the door at the set point, but the door can still be pulled manually past it without tearing up the door, the frame, the holder/release device, or nearby hardware. On a busy corridor where staff swing doors hard, that is what keeps the track from being ripped off the header.
11) What is a comparable Grade 1 closer with an electronic hold-open arm from another brand?
The Cal-Royal CR441EHO is a Grade 1 door closer with an electronic hold-open track arm, so it is the closest cross-brand equivalent in application. The DORMA TS9315 EMF is the one to stay with when the specification calls for ANSI/BHMA certified holder/release devices tied into a fire and smoke control system with the patented hold open release.
12) Is the Cal-Royal CR441EHO the same thing as the DORMA TS9315 EMF/PT, or do they do different jobs?
Both are Grade 1 closers with electronic hold-open track arms, so they cover the same job of holding a door open until a signal drops it. The DORMA TS9315 EMF/PT is the no-detector model: it holds and releases on a signal from a fire or smoke control system or on a main power failure, and it is meant to be wired into that system, either concealed or surface wiring. If the opening needs the detector built into the device itself rather than a signal from a panel, the detector-equipped EMR model is the one to specify, and one EMR unit can control one EMF unit on a pair of doors. Confirm which side the arm lands on as well: the TS9315 EMF/PT is a push side, non-handed device.
13) I need a hold-open closer for a heavy opening. Does the DORMA TS9315 EMF/PT or the Cal-Royal CR441EHO handle a larger door?
The DORMA TS9315 EMF/PT is a heavy duty unit adjustable across closer sizes 1 to 5, so one part number covers a range from a light interior leaf up to a wide or heavy door. Its TS93 Contur cam and roller technology is the model in the EMF/EMR family intended for larger doors, while the 8900 rack and pinion version offers a narrower projection and the 8600 is the value engineered option. The Cal-Royal CR441EHO is also a Grade 1 closer with an electronic hold-open track arm. Size the closer to the door width, weight, and any stack pressure at the opening.
14) Can I replace a standard door closer with the DORMA TS9315 EMF/PT, or do I need an electrified model like the Cal-Royal CR441EHO?
A plain mechanical closer will not hold a door open on a signal and drop it on alarm. That function needs an electrified hold-open device: the DORMA TS9315 EMF/PT is an electronic Grade 1 unit whose electromagnetic hold open is interrupted on an alarm state or main power failure so the door closes, and the Cal-Royal CR441EHO is a Grade 1 closer with an electronic hold-open track arm serving the same purpose. Either way, plan for power and for the tie into the fire or smoke control system; the TS9315 EMF/PT can be wired concealed or surface and interfaces with new or existing systems. Note the TS9315 EMF/PT is a commercial, non-ADA-compliant unit, so confirm opening force requirements before committing on an accessible route.
15) What finishes does the DORMA TS9315 EMF come in?
Six finishes: 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze, 691 light bronze, 693 black, 695 dark bronze, and 696 satin brass. Matching an existing run of openings usually comes down to 689 or 690, which are the two most common on commercial closers, and painted black (693) is the pick when the closer needs to disappear against a dark frame.
16) Which hold-open closer matches existing dark bronze hardware across a building?
The DORMA TS9315 EMF/PT comes in 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze, 691 light bronze, 693 black, 695 dark bronze, and 696 satin brass, so a dark bronze opening can be matched in either 690 or 695 to sit alongside the rest of the hardware on the floor. It is a Grade 1 heavy duty electromagnetic holder/release track closer. The Cal-Royal CR441EHO is a Grade 1 closer with an electronic hold-open track arm covering the same function if the standard is being set fresh rather than matched.
