Dormakaba BTS75V-NHO – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I need to order a separate spindle and cement case with the Dorma BTS75V?
The cement case is included, the spindle is not. This is the closer body with cement case, less spindle, so you order the spindle separately and match it to your floor covering and threshold height. That is deliberate on the BTS75V, since the interchangeable spindle range is what lets one closer body suit different floor build-ups. Get the finished floor thickness and the door bottom clearance before you pick it.
2) Is the BTS75V handed, and can it be used on a double-acting door?
Non-handed. The BTS75V works on both single-acting and double-acting doors, so you do not specify left or right hand when ordering, and one part number covers openings that swing one way and openings that swing both. For a property manager standardizing a building, that is one fewer variable to track across doors.
3) Can I get the Dorma BTS75V with hold open, or is it non-hold-open only?
Three hold-open choices are offered: non-hold-open, 90 degree hold open, and 105 degree hold open. Pick the one that matches how the door is used, a lobby door you want to prop during move-ins wants hold open, a door on a fire-rated or smoke-separation opening does not. Note that the 105 degree hold open cannot be combined with the barrier free option; 90 degree hold open and non-hold-open both can.
4) Is the Dorma BTS75V ADA compliant for a barrier-free opening?
The BTS75V is not ADA compliant as catalogued. There is a barrier free option offered when ordering, and the spring is adjustable from size 1 to 4 so it can be dialed down for low-force openings, but if your opening has to meet ADA opening force you should confirm the specific configuration against the requirement rather than assume the base closer meets it. The barrier free option is available with non-hold-open and with 90 degree hold open, not with 105 degree hold open.
5) What is the difference between the Norton Rixson 25 Series cement case and the Dorma BTS75V?
The Norton Rixson 253000 is a floor closer cement case in heavy duty galvanized steel, a Grade 1 rated case on its own. The BTS75V is the closer body itself supplied with its cement case, so the two are not interchangeable line items: ordering the 253000 gets you the buried case and not the operating closer, while the BTS75V brings the mechanism that controls the door, adjustable spring size 1 through 4 with mechanical backcheck. If you are replacing a worn closer in an existing floor pocket, you are shopping for a body; if you are pouring a new slab, the case is what goes in first.
6) The door needs to swing a full 180 degrees - will the BTS75V handle it or do I need a different floor closer?
The Norton Rixson 20 Series is the floor closer specified with 180 degree door swing capability, on a 3/4 inch offset hung door. The BTS75V controls the door through a closing range of 175 degrees to 70 degrees and 70 degrees to 0 degrees, with mechanical backcheck to protect the opening at the far end of the swing. If the leaf has to lay back to a full 180 and the door is offset hung, the 20 Series is written for that swing; if 175 degrees clears your wall condition, the BTS75V covers it and handles double acting service as well.
7) Will a floor closer fit in a thin concrete slab, or do I need a deeper pour?
The BTS75V has a compact body specifically so it can go into thin slab concrete subfloor construction where a larger floor closer body will not fit. That is the usual reason a floor closer gets ruled out on a renovation, the existing slab is not deep enough to take the cement case. If you are cutting into an existing slab rather than pouring new, this is the size class to be looking at.
8) Should I use a floor closer or an overhead closer on a glass entrance door?
A floor-concealed closer like the BTS75V is what you use when there is no header to mount to or when the hardware has to disappear, which is the normal situation on all-glass and narrow-stile aluminum entrances. It carries the door weight and controls the swing from the floor, up to 260 lbs. An overhead closer needs a frame head or door top rail substantial enough to take it and is visible on the opening. If you have a proper header and appearance is not a concern, the overhead is the simpler install, since the floor closer means cutting the slab for the cement case.
9) Is the Dorma BTS75V Grade 1, and is it rated for commercial traffic?
ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 certified and specified for commercial use, not residential. Grade 1 is the top durability tier in the BHMA scheme and is what most institutional and government specs call for on entrance openings. Combined with the mechanical backcheck, which stops the door from being thrown into the wall or adjacent glass when it is pushed hard or caught by wind, it is built for the traffic a school, hospital, or hotel entrance sees.
10) How far does the BTS75V control the door as it closes?
Closing is controlled in two stages, 175 degrees down to 70 degrees, then 70 degrees to 0. That second range is the latching stage, the one that decides whether the door actually pulls into the latch or stalls an inch short in a windy lobby. Having sweep and latch adjustable separately is what lets you slow the main swing for safety while still driving the door closed at the end.
11) What else could I use instead of the Dorma BTS75V on a heavy commercial entrance?
For a heavier or offset-hung opening, ZenSupply carries the Norton Rixson H28 Series concealed floor closer, which is heavy duty, Grade 1, and made for offset-hung doors. The BTS75V tops out at 260 lbs door weight and covers doors to 3'6" interior, so if you are past that or the door is offset-hung, the H28 is the direction to look. If you already have a serviceable closer and only the case has failed, the Norton Rixson 25 Series galvanized steel cement case is sold on its own.
12) Can one BTS75V be adjusted to suit different doors, or do I order a specific spring size?
One part covers spring sizes 1 through 4, adjusted at the closer rather than fixed at the factory. For anyone standardizing a fleet of openings, that means the same closer body goes on a light interior door and a full-size entrance, and the installer sets the power on site. It also means a door that gets reglazed or reskinned heavier later can be re-tuned instead of replaced, as long as it stays inside the 260 lb weight limit.
13) Is there a lighter duty floor closer than the Dorma BTS75V for an interior office door?
The Norton Rixson 20 Series is a standard duty floor closer for 3/4 inch offset hung doors, with 180 degree door swing capability. The BTS75V is a Grade 1 closer rated to a 260 pound maximum door weight and covers interior doors from 2 feet to 3 feet 6 inches wide. If your interior leaf is a light hollow metal or wood door on an offset hung frame, the 20 Series covers it in a standard duty package; if the leaf is heavy or the opening is double acting, the BTS75V is the one that carries it.
14) For a facility standardizing on Grade 1 floor closers, which options meet that requirement?
Three floor closers carry the Grade 1 certification: the Dorma BTS75V, the Norton Rixson H28 Series concealed floor closer, and the Norton Rixson 253000 cement case. Within that group the BTS75V is the non-handed body for single and double acting doors, the H28 is the offset-hung concealed closer, and the 253000 is the galvanized steel case. Standardizing across a mixed set of openings usually means matching the closer to how each door is hung rather than picking one model for the whole facility, so specify by hanging condition and hold the Grade 1 requirement across all of them.
