1) How heavy a door will the Dorma BTS80 floor closer handle?
Door weight rating on the BTS80 is 660 lb, and it is built as a heavy duty commercial closer, ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 certified. Dorma rates it to control exceptionally heavy single and double acting doors, which is the reason it gets specified on entrances where an overhead closer would be working past its limit. Check your door leaf weight against 660 first, then pick the spring size.
2) Can I adjust the closing power on a Dorma BTS80 floor closer after it is installed?
No. The BTS80 uses fixed spring sizes, so closing power is decided by which size you order, not by a spring adjustment in the field. Three sizes are offered: 3, 4 and 6. Get that call right on the order, because changing it later means lifting the closer body back out of the floor. Mechanical backcheck is part of the closer no matter which size you specify.
3) Will a Dorma BTS80 work on a door that swings both directions, and do I have to specify handing?
There is no handing to specify. The BTS80 is non-handed and works single acting or double acting, so the same closer body covers a right hand door, a left hand door, and a door that swings both ways. 5) Can I drop a Dorma BTS80 closer body into the cement case already in my floor?
Only if that case is the matching BTS80 case. A floor closer sits in a cement case cast into the slab, and the case, the closer body and the cover plate are matched by model rather than being interchangeable between makers. The Norton Rixson 25 Series cement case we carry, for instance, is a Rixson case for Rixson closers, not a BTS80 part. If you are pulling out another manufacturer's floor closer, plan on the old case coming out with it and new concrete work, unless you have confirmed the replacement body fits the existing case.
6) What is the closest heavy duty equivalent to the Dorma BTS80 concealed floor closer from another manufacturer?
The nearest match is the Norton Rixson H28. It is a heavy duty concealed floor closer certified to Grade 1, the same duty level and grade the BTS80 carries. The difference is how the door hangs. The H28 is built for offset-hung doors, while the BTS80 is non-handed and rated for both single-acting and double-acting doors. 8) Can a floor closer be installed in a thin concrete slab, or does it need a deeper pour?
The BTS80's body is compact enough for thin slab concrete subfloor construction, which is exactly the situation where a larger floor closer gets ruled out. Depth at the opening is usually what kills a floor closer on a retrofit, so this is the one to look at when the slab is shallow. You are not trading away capacity to get there either: it is still heavy duty and Grade 1 certified, with a 660 lb door weight rating. Get the case depth to your concrete sub before the pour or the core.
9) Is the Dorma BTS80 floor closer fire rated or ADA compliant?
Neither one. The BTS80 is recorded as not fire rated and not ADA compliant. The ADA answer follows from how the closer is built: spring sizes are fixed, so there is no way to dial opening force down for an accessible opening.
