FEATURES

The BTS80 Series of floor-concealed door closers offers adaptability to almost any installation.
The closer’s compact body permits its use where a larger closer would be prohibitive. Versatility allows installation in thin slab concrete subfloor construction. A wide selection of interchangeable spindles makes the BTS80 suitable for virtually any floor covering or threshold application. Because the BTS80 can control exceptionally heavy single- and double-acting doors, you can incorporate the floor closer into almost any design to meet most materials, size, and weight requirements. Trouble-free performance under adverse climatic and traffic conditions makes the BTS80 floor-concealed closer dependable and a perfect choice for even the most rigorous applications. For total control and uncompromising creativity for any door opening, specify a BTS80 floor-concealed closer.

Dormakaba BTS80G-4-80010-RH-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the DORMA BTS80G floor closer need to be handed when I order it?
Yes, and it's the first thing to settle. The BTS80G is a single acting closer and every orderable combination carries a Left Hand or Right Hand designation, so a left hand door takes an LH closer and a right hand door takes an RH one. That's different from the non-handed double-acting BTS80 body, where one closer covers either swing. Determine handing at the opening before you order, because the wrong hand is not field-correctable on a single acting unit.
2) How heavy and how wide a door can a DORMA BTS80 floor closer handle?
Up to 660 lb, with width limits that depend on where the door is. Interior doors can run to 4 feet 6 inches wide, exterior doors to 4 feet 0 inches. That covers most full-height aluminum storefront and entrance leaves. If your leaf is wider than 4 feet on an exterior opening, the BTS80 is outside its stated range regardless of the spring size you pick.
3) Which BTS80G closer size should I specify, 3, 4 or 6?
Spring size on the BTS80G is fixed at the factory, not adjustable in the field, so the size is a real ordering decision. Size 3 is the light one and it has the backcheck removed so the door stays barrier-free through 90 degrees of opening, which is why it gets used on interior passage doors where opening force matters. Sizes 4 and 6 keep the mechanical backcheck at roughly 70 degrees and carry the heavier and wider leaves up toward the 660 lb limit. Wind-loaded exterior entrances generally want the larger spring; a light interior leaf with easy-passage requirements wants the 3.
4) Will a BTS80 floor closer fit in a thin slab concrete floor?
That's the case the BTS80 was built for. The closer body and cement case are 2-3/8 inches deep, shallow enough for thin slab concrete construction where a deeper floor closer would mean cutting into structure. Confirm you have 2-3/8 inches of usable depth under the threshold line before you commit.
5) My finish floor height isn't final yet. Can the BTS80 closer be adjusted after the cement case is poured in?
Yes, within limits, and this is the main reason the BTS80 survives real jobsite tolerances. Once the cement case is set, the closer body adjusts 1/4 inch laterally and 1/4 inch longitudinally, plus 5/32 inch of vertical height. Beyond that, the spindle is the adjustment: field interchangeable spindles cover bottom door clearances from 5/16 inch to 2-5/16 inches, so a change in floor covering or threshold height is handled by swapping the spindle rather than repouring.
6) Can I use a DORMA BTS80G on a fire rated door?
No. The BTS80G is not fire rated, and the standard BTS80 body offers hold open and delayed action, both of which are disqualifying on a fire door. For fire door openings Dorma specifies the BTS80 F instead, which is U.L. and C.U.L. listed for fire doors, handed, and non-hold-open only. Do not substitute the BTS80G into a rated opening.
7) Does a DORMA BTS80 floor closer meet the low opening force requirement for an accessible entrance?
No. The BTS80G is not an ADA compliant closer, so if your opening has to meet accessible opening force it is the wrong choice as specified. The one nuance worth knowing is that the size 3 has its backcheck removed specifically to stay barrier-free through 90 degrees of opening, which helps passage but does not make the closer ADA compliant. On a code-driven accessible entrance, look at a low-energy power operator instead.
8) My door is offset hung rather than center pivoted. Is the BTS80G still the right floor closer?
Offset hung is a different closer family. The BTS80G is a center-hung concealed floor closer for aluminum door and frame construction. If your opening is hung on a 3/4 inch offset pivot, the Norton Rixson 127 Series is a heavy duty 3/4 inch offset floor closer built for deep reveal applications, and the Norton Rixson 20 Series is a 3/4 inch offset hung closer with 180 degree swing, rated standard duty rather than heavy. The Norton Rixson H28 Series is the heavy duty concealed choice for offset-hung doors. Pin down how the leaf is hung before choosing, because a center-hung closer and an offset-hung door do not reconcile in the field.
9) What is the closest heavy duty floor closer equivalent to the DORMA BTS80G for a center hung aluminum door?
The BTS80G is a single acting, concealed floor closer rated for doors up to 660 lb and built to heavy duty. The nearest heavy duty concealed floor closer in the Norton Rixson line is the H28 Series, SC-H28S-105-587, also a heavy duty Grade 1 concealed floor closer, but it is built for offset hung doors rather than the center hung aluminum door and frame the BTS80G is intended for. If the door is offset hung, the H28 is the closer to quote; if it pivots on center, stay with the BTS80G.
10) Can I order a Norton Rixson 25 Series cement case as a substitute for the BTS80G floor closer?
No. The Norton Rixson 253000-PKG is the 25 Series floor closer cement case in heavy duty galvanized steel construction, which is the buried housing the closer sits in, not a closer at all. The BTS80G is the closer itself, a single acting concealed floor closer for doors up to 660 lb. A cement case and a closer body are two separate line items on a floor closer order, and the case is series specific, so a 25 Series case is not the box for a BTS80.
11) Does the BTS80 floor closer hold the door open, and can I turn that off?
It does. The BTS80 gives selectable multipoint hold open anywhere between roughly 75 and 175 degrees, so you set the hold point to suit the opening rather than accepting one fixed detent. There's also selectable delayed action from 175 down to 75 degrees for carts and loaded traffic, with the release point adjustable between 75 and 105 degrees. Delayed action only functions when hold open is not engaged, so it's one or the other on a given door, not both at once.
12) Will the BTS80 floor closer still close properly in winter on an exterior entrance?
That's what the dual valve setup is for. The BTS80 uses two thermostatic control valves with a special hydraulic fluid to hold a controlled closing speed from about 175 degrees, including in cold temperature conditions, which is the usual failure mode on an exterior floor closer left through a freeze. For outdoor and wet locations, order the SC2 sealing compound with it. SC2 keeps water and cleaning solvents out of the cement case, and a flooded case is what kills floor closers set at grade.
13) I'm replacing an old floor closer but reusing the existing cement case. Can I just buy the closer body?
Treat the case and the body as two separate decisions. A BTS80G closer body is sized to the BTS80 cement case, which is 2-3/8 inches deep, and it gets its final position from 1/4 inch of lateral and longitudinal adjustment and 5/32 inch of height adjustment inside that case. If the case in your floor is another manufacturer's, the body will not simply drop in and you're looking at a case replacement. Where the case itself is what failed, the Norton Rixson 25 Series cement case is sold as its own package in heavy-duty galvanized steel.
14) Do I need a floor stop with a BTS80 floor closer?
Often yes. The BTS80 controls the door through roughly 175 degrees of opening, and if door hardware, a return wall, or adjacent structure stops the leaf before that, Dorma calls for an auxiliary stop to be installed. There is a pressure relief valve in the closer that protects it from damage caused by forced closing, but that protects the closer, it does not substitute for a stop at the end of the swing. Budget the stop into the opening when the geometry restricts full opening.
15) What actually gets specified when I order a BTS80G, and what do I add on top?
Three choices define the part: spring size (3, 4 or 6), handing (left or right), and cover finish (605, 606, 613, 625 or 626). Those three are locked in at the order, since the spring size is fixed rather than field-adjustable and the single acting body is handed. Beyond the closer itself, plan on the spindle appropriate to your floor covering or threshold, since spindles are interchangeable across a 5/16 to 2-5/16 inch bottom clearance range, the SC2 sealing compound where water or cleaning solvent can reach the case, and an auxiliary stop if the opening cannot swing free.
16) For a facility standardizing on Grade 1 floor closers, which units besides the DORMA BTS80G carry that certification?
The BTS80 Series is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.4 for grade 1 closers. Among the Norton Rixson floor closer parts, the H28 Series SC-H28S-105-587 concealed floor closer is Grade 1 heavy duty, and the 25 Series cement case 253000-PKG is Grade 1 heavy duty as well. Specifying the BTS80G alongside the H28 keeps a Grade 1 closer on both center hung aluminum and offset hung openings in the same building.
17) Is there a lighter duty floor closer alternative to the DORMA BTS80G?
The BTS80G is a heavy duty closer carrying doors up to 660 lb. Where the door is lighter and offset hung, the Norton Rixson 20 Series, RIX-20, is a standard duty 3/4 inch offset hung floor closer with 180 degree door swing. It is the standard duty option among the floor closers; the BTS80G, the Rixson 127 Series and the H28 Series are all heavy duty.
18) What finishes does the DORMA BTS80G cover plate come in?
Five orderable finishes on the BTS80G: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. Every one of those is available in both left hand and right hand and in all three spring sizes, so finish never restricts which closer size you can specify. On a property where the storefront pulls and rails are already 626, the satin chrome plate is the match, since the cover is the only part of the closer anyone sees.
