1) How heavy a door will the Dorma BTS80H floor closer handle?
The BTS80H is rated for doors up to 660 lbs, which is why it gets used on heavy glass, solid wood, and steel entrance doors where a surface closer would be undersized. It is a heavy duty closer, and the spring size is fixed per unit rather than field adjustable, so pick the size against your door weight and width when you order.
2) Is the Dorma BTS80H single acting or double acting?
The BTS80H is the single acting version, so it closes a door that swings one way only. The BTS80 body itself is non-handed and can be set up for single or double acting service, but the H model as configured is single acting, and you order it left hand or right hand to match the opening. If you need a door that swings both directions, in and out, this is not the configuration to order.
3) Do I have to specify handing when ordering the BTS80H floor closer?
Yes, handing is an order option on the BTS80H. Every unit is built as either Left Hand or Right Hand, so establish the swing at the opening before ordering. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your left and the door swings away from you, that's Left Hand. A closer ordered in the wrong hand will not work on that opening.
4) Which spring size of the Dorma BTS80H do I need?
Three closer sizes are offered on the BTS80H: size 3, size 4, and size 6. Spring sizes are fixed, not adjustable in the field, so the size is a purchase decision rather than something you dial in on site. Larger door width and weight, plus exterior openings that see wind, push you up the range toward size 6; interior doors of moderate width sit at size 3 or 4.
5) Will a Dorma BTS80H work on a fire rated door opening?
No. The BTS80H is not fire rated, so it cannot go on a labeled fire door assembly. Floor closers on fire openings have to carry the rating themselves; use a labeled closer for those openings and keep the BTS80H on non-rated entrance and interior doors.

10) Is the Norton Rixson 25 Series cement case a substitute for the BTS80H?
No. The Norton Rixson 253000 is a floor closer cement case in heavy duty galvanized steel construction - it is the box that gets set in the floor slab, not the closer mechanism. The BTS80H is the concealed closer body itself, single acting and rated to 660 pounds. If a buyer is pricing a floor closer against a cement case, they are comparing two different line items on the same opening.
11) Does the BTS80H floor closer have a hold open?
Hold open is included on the BTS80H. That is what the H in the model designation covers, and it lets the door stand open at position rather than closing every cycle, which is what you want on a service entrance or a door that gets propped during move-ins and deliveries. Note that hold open is not permitted on a fire door assembly, and this closer is not fire rated in any case.
12) Will the BTS80H work with my floor covering and threshold?
