1) What spring size should I order for the Dorma BTS80C floor closer, and what are the choices?
The BTS80C comes in three spring sizes: size 3, size 4 and size 6. These are fixed spring sizes, not field-adjustable, so the size is a purchase decision rather than something you dial in after install. Pick the size that matches the door's width and weight, because the BTS80 line is built to control exceptionally heavy single- and double-acting doors and an undersized spring will not pull a heavy leaf shut.
2) Is the Dorma BTS80C floor closer handed, or can I use one closer on either swing?
The BTS80 floor closer body is non-handed and works for both single-acting and double-acting doors, so the same closer serves a left or right hand opening. What you do have to get right is the spindle and the cover plate, since those are what suit the floor covering, threshold and the offset your door is hung at.
3) Can a floor closer be installed in a thin concrete slab, or do I need a deep pour?
The BTS80 is one of the ones you can use in thin slab concrete subfloor construction. Its body is compact enough to go where a larger floor closer will not fit, which is the usual reason a floor closer gets ruled out on a retrofit over an existing slab. 4) Does the Dorma BTS80C hold the door open, and is the hold open adjustable?
Hold open is built into the BTS80C, and it is a multipoint hold open, meaning the door can be parked at more than one open position rather than a single fixed detent. That is the difference between the BTS80C and a plain BTS80 closer without the hold open feature.
5) What else besides the closer do I need to order for a concealed floor closer installation?
Two things people forget. First, the spindle: the BTS80 takes interchangeable spindles selected for your floor covering thickness and threshold condition, and the spindle length has to bring the closer up flush with finished floor. Second, the cement case that the closer body sets into in the slab. If you are bidding a Norton Rixson floor closer instead, the 25 Series cement case is sold as its own galvanized steel package for the same reason.
6) Is the Norton Rixson 25 Series cement case a substitute for a Dorma BTS80C?
No. The Norton Rixson 253000 is a cement case only, the galvanized steel box that gets set in the floor slab to receive a closer body. It contains no closing mechanism. The BTS80C is the closer itself, with the spring, mechanical backcheck and multipoint hold open. If you are building a new opening you may need both a case and a closer; if you are replacing a failed closer in an existing floor, the case is not what you want.
7) Is the Dorma BTS80 floor closer rated for high traffic entrances like a storefront or lobby?
Yes. It is a heavy duty commercial closer and the door closer is ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 certified, which is the top durability tier for closers. Dorma positions the BTS80 for trouble-free performance under adverse climatic and traffic conditions, so an exterior lobby or storefront leaf is the intended application, not the edge case.
8) What is backcheck on a floor closer and does the BTS80 have it?
The BTS80 has mechanical backcheck. Backcheck slows the door near the end of the opening swing so wind or someone shoving it does not throw the leaf into the adjacent wall or wrap the glass around the stop. On an exterior door catching wind load, it is the feature that protects the door and frame.
9) What is a comparable Grade 1 concealed floor closer to the Dorma BTS80 for an offset hung door?

The Norton Rixson 20 Series is the standard duty option in floor closers, for 3/4 inch offset hung doors with 180 degree swing capability. The BTS80C is a heavy duty commercial closer sized to control exceptionally heavy single and double acting doors, which is more closer than a light interior leaf needs. Note the two use different offset geometry, so the choice is driven by how the door is hung as much as by weight.
12) I need a Grade 1 certified floor closer for a specification. Which options meet that?
The Dorma BTS80 Series is ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 certified. Among the comparable floor closers, the Norton Rixson H28 Series concealed closer for offset-hung doors is Grade 1, and the Norton Rixson 25 Series cement case is Grade 1 as well, though the case is a floor box rather than a closer.
