Dormakaba ES86 FSV U 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Dorma ES86 electric strike work with a cylindrical lockset?
That's exactly what the ES86 is built for. It's a centerline latch entry electric strike for cylindrical locks, so it takes the latchbolt of a knob or lever set rather than a mortise or rim exit device latch. If the door has a rim exit device on it instead, the ES86 is the wrong part in the ES family, look at a rim strike like the ES62 or the fire rated ES62F.
2) Can I use the Dorma ES86 on a fire rated door?
No. The ES86 is not fire rated, so keep it off fire and smoke check door assemblies. Within the same ES family the fire rated options are the ES62F for rim exit devices, the ES72F for heavy duty applications, the ES74F with its saddle mounted housing and tamper resistant guard, and the ES96F for offset and centerline latch entry. For a fire door with a cylindrical lock, the fire rated centerline strike is where to look.
3) What voltage does the Dorma ES86 strike need, and do I have to pick one when I order?
You don't pick a voltage. The ES86 uses a multi voltage single solenoid rated 12/24 VAC/DC, so one strike covers all four combinations off whatever power supply or access control board is already feeding the opening. That's part of why it's sold as an all in one, integrators and distributors stock a single unit instead of four.
4) Can the Dorma ES86 be set up fail safe or fail secure?
Both, and it's field selectable. The ES86 ships with a selectable lock mode, so you set fail safe or fail secure on the strike itself rather than ordering a specific version. Fail safe releases the latch when power drops, fail secure keeps it locked. Egress side is unaffected either way, the lockset's own lever still retracts the latch.
5) What faceplates come with the Dorma ES86, and will one fit my existing frame cutout?
Three faceplates are in the box, so most frame preps are covered without a separate order: 1-1/4 inch to 4-7/8 inch with radius corners, 1-1/4 inch to 4-7/8 inch with square corners, and 1-7/16 inch to 7-15/16 inch with radius corners. Measure the existing strike cutout, if it matches an ANSI 4-7/8 inch prep either of the first two will cover it depending on whether your frame corners are radiused or square. The taller 7-15/16 inch plate covers larger or previously modified preps.
6) Do I need to order a left hand or right hand version of the ES86 electric strike?
No handing to specify. The ES86 is non handed, so the same strike works on a left or right hand opening and there's nothing to get wrong on the order. It also has horizontal adjustment built in, which lets you dial the keeper in to the latch after the frame is prepped instead of shimming.
7) What is the difference between the ES86 with LM and the one without?
The LM option adds a latch monitor switch, which reports back to the access control panel whether the latch is actually seated in the keeper. Order LM when the opening is monitored, alarmed, or tied to a door position report at a head end. Without it you get the strike alone, releasing on command with no status feedback. Both builds are otherwise the same strike.
8) Is the Dorma ES86 electric strike UL listed?
UL/CUL listed, which covers the ES Series for both US and Canadian installs. Note that listing is not a fire rating, the ES86 itself is not fire rated and shouldn't go on a fire door assembly.
9) What finish does the Dorma ES86 strike come in?
630 stainless steel, the standard satin stainless used on commercial frames. If the rest of the openings in the building are running 630 lever sets and push plates, the strike faceplate will match without a special order.
10) Is the ES86 strike suitable for a house or apartment door, or is it commercial only?
It's specified as commercial. The ES86 is intended for private, public and commercial premises where a lockset is tied into access control, entry buzzers, or a card reader, not for a residential door with no power at the frame. Multi-family common area and tenant suite entries are squarely in scope, individual apartment doors with no wiring are not.
11) Do I have to hardwire the ES86, or does it use connectors?
Plug in wire connectors come on the ES86, so the strike lands on the frame wiring without splicing at the mortise pocket. Combined with the multi voltage solenoid and selectable lock mode, an installer can set the unit up and connect it without opening a different part number for each configuration.
