1) Which exit devices will the Dormakaba E-Plex 201U electronic trim mount to?
The E-Plex 201U keypad trim is built for specific rim, mortise, and surface vertical rod devices from the major brands: Arrow S1250 and S3800, Corbin Russwin 5200/5200A, Detex 10/F10, Dorma 9300/9300F, Monarch 18R/F-18R, Precision 21/FL21, Sargent 2828, 3828, 8800 and 8888, Von Duprin 22/22F, 98/98F and 99/99F, and Yale 7100. Backset varies by whichever device you are trimming, so there is nothing to specify on that. The exit device itself and its mounting hardware are bought separately. Dormakaba notes that compatibility can change if a device manufacturer modifies its product.
2) What is the difference between the U, V and Y locking device codes on the E-Plex 201U exit trim?
Those three codes tell Dormakaba which manufacturer's device the trim has to land on. U covers select Detex, Dorma, Von Duprin, Precision, Arrow and Sargent models. V is for select Von Duprin models only. Y is for select Yale and Corbin Russwin models. All three are limited to devices with function 1 or 2, so identify the device model and function on the door before you pick the code. Get this wrong and the escutcheon will not line up with the device's trim prep.
3) What door prep does the Dormakaba E-Plex 201U exit trim need, and does it have to be wired?
Prep is ASA 161 plus three additional through bore holes, in either a wood or a metal door, on top of whatever prep the exit device itself requires. No wiring runs to or through the door, and no power transfer or hinge harness is involved, which takes pinched-wire callbacks off the table on a retrofit. That is the practical reason a lot of property managers put this on an existing opening instead of an electrified trim: the door and frame do not have to be drilled or cored for cable.
4) What key override options come on the E-Plex 201U, and do I get a cylinder with it?
Three choices. XS is a key-in-lever with a Kaba cylinder in the Schlage C keyway included, so it drops straight into a building already keyed to Schlage C. B takes a small format interchangeable core, BEST and equivalents in 6 or 7 pin length, and the core is not included, so pull one from your own stock and key it to the existing system. The third option is a solid lever with no override at all, code entry only. Note on the B option: the lever preps are not interchangeable, so the override choice is made at order time and cannot be swapped later in the field.
5) Should I use a standalone keypad exit trim like the E-Plex, or an electrified exit trim?
It comes down to whether you are willing to get power to the door. The E-Plex 2000 runs on codes at the keypad with no wiring to or through the door, so there is no transformer, no power transfer and no access control panel behind it, and it holds up to 100 codes managed at the door or through optional Excel based software. An electrified trim, such as the Command Access ET25 or ET15 with 12V/24V operation and fail safe or fail secure options, or the Von Duprin E360L-BE-03 fail safe electric passage trim for 33/35A devices, is the answer when the opening has to tie into card readers, a fire alarm release, or a central system that unlocks and locks on a schedule. Small door counts and retrofits lean toward the keypad; an integrated system leans electrified.
6) Can I use an E-Plex 201U exit trim on a narrow stile aluminum storefront door?
No. The E-Plex 2000 exit trim needs a 5 inch (127 mm) minimum stile and is a wide stile part, so a typical narrow stile aluminum door will not take it. For narrow stile openings the trim options are things like the BEST Precision 2901 narrow stile lever trim or the 2000 Series narrow stile pull trim, both for Precision 2000 Series devices, but be clear about what you lose: both are exit only, meaning no outside entry at all, whereas the E-Plex controls who gets in from the outside. If you need coded outside access, the door needs a stile that can take a wide stile trim.
7) What do I need to order along with the E-Plex 201U to finish the job?
The trim is exactly that, a trim. The exit device and its mounting hardware are not included, so the device has to be on the door already or ordered with it, and it has to be one of the listed models in function 1 or 2.
