Dormakaba QDB286-613-S4-DBS-SC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Dormakaba QDB286 deadbolt fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
Yes, the QDB200 series covers 1-3/8 inch (35mm) through 2 inch (51mm) doors, but a 1-3/8 inch door needs the 8Q00082 spacer rings, which are a separate service part. On anything from 1-3/4 inch up to 2 inch, the deadbolt installs as supplied. That 2 inch top end is wider than most Grade 2 deadbolts we carry, so it covers thick or clad doors that a standard 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch bolt will not.
2) What backset and cross bore does the QDB286 deadbolt need in the door?
Standard door prep: a 2-1/8 inch (54mm) diameter cross bore with a 2-3/4 inch (70mm) backset. A 2-3/8 inch (60mm) backset is also orderable if the existing bore sits closer to the edge. 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inches are the two normal backsets on bored hardware, so the QDB286 drops into either prep without redrilling. The latch itself is adjustable backset, which is what lets one part cover both.
3) Will the QDB286 deadbolt latch into my existing deadbolt strike?
The bolt is a full 1 inch (25.4mm) throw with a hardened steel roller, and it ships with the standard 1-1/8 inch x 2-3/4 inch square corner deadbolt strike. If your frame already has a 1-1/8 x 2-3/4 inch square cutout, which is the common commercial deadbolt strike prep, the new strike drops straight in. Round corner or other strike options are available if the existing mortise is radiused. The 1 inch throw is what a Grade 2 deadbolt needs to reach through the gap on a commercial frame.
4) Can I use my existing small format interchangeable cores with the Dormakaba QDB286?
Yes. Order the SFIC cylinder version and it arrives prepped with no core, so you drop in the SFIC cores you already run on the building and the deadbolt joins your existing keying system on day one. The other two choices are a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, or less cylinder if you are supplying your own. Keying is specified separately as keyed different, keyed alike across multiple locks, or none when you go less cylinder.
5) Is the QDB286 deadbolt fire rated for a labeled door?
UL and cUL listed to 3 hours for A label single door openings up to 4 by 8 feet, positive pressure rated to UL10C/UBC 7-2 (1997), and also UL10B pressure rated. It certifies to ANSI/BHMA A156.12 Grade 2 and meets ANSI A117.1 for accessibility, with an ADA compliant thumbturn. There is also a Miami-Dade N.O.A. hurricane compliant option for coastal work.
6) What should I use instead of the Dormakaba QDB286 if the opening needs a Grade 1 deadbolt?
Step up to a Grade 1 body. The Falcon D111 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with adjustable backset, heavy duty, in the D100 Series. The Hager 3118 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with a Schlage C keyway and a 6-pin cylinder, covering doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. Corbin Russwin's DL3011 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock with a cylinder x blank configuration for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch. The QDB286 is a Grade 2 standard duty deadbolt.
7) I need a deadbolt keyed on both sides instead of a thumbturn - what replaces the Dormakaba QDB286?
A double cylinder body is a different part, not an option on the QDB286, which operates cylinder x thumbturn. The Hager 3214 is a Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt with a Schlage C keyway for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Dexter DB2000 double cylinder is a Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt over the same 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch range, and the Delaney LU Series 320601 is a Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt in stainless steel US32D. Confirm your local code allows a double cylinder on the opening before specifying one.
8) What looks like a substitute for the Dormakaba QDB286 but will not drop into the same door prep?
Several deadbolt-named parts take entirely different preparation. The Codelocks CL200 is a surface deadbolt with key override, mounted on the face of the door rather than through a cross bore. The Emtek 2050 and 2051 are European mortise deadbolts with an integrated roller latch, which require a mortise pocket. The DynaLock 1300 Series is a mortise electric deadbolt and needs power. The Arrow 460 is a mortise lock strike, not a lock at all. The QDB286 is a bored lockset that installs in a standard 2-1/8 inch diameter cross bore.
9) I am standardizing a building on one deadbolt with a Schlage C keyway - what are my options besides the Dormakaba QDB286?
Hager builds a line on the Schlage C keyway: the 3115 is Grade 2 cylinder x thumbturn, the 3215 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt with a 1 inch throw, and the 3118 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with a 6-pin cylinder. All three are fire rated and cover doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The QDB286 conventional cylinder is a Schlage C keyway as well, with a full 1 inch steel throw bolt, so a facility already cut to Schlage C can key any of these into the same system.
10) What is the difference between the Dormakaba QDB286 and a cylindrical deadlock like the Corbin Russwin DL3211?
The Corbin Russwin DL3211 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock configured cylinder x blank for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the DL2211 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock, cylinder x blank, classroom function for 1-3/4 inch doors. Cylinder x blank means there is no thumbturn on the inside - the bolt is operated by key from the keyed side only. The QDB286 is cylinder x thumbturn, so occupants can throw and retract the bolt from inside without a key. On an occupied room that distinction is an egress decision, not a preference.
11) What should I use instead of the Dormakaba QDB286 on a door thicker than 2 inches?
The QDB286 covers doors 1-3/8 inch through 2 inch, with service part 8Q00082 spacer rings required at 1-3/8 inch. For a thicker door, the Corbin Russwin DL3011 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock rated for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch, which carries past the 2 inch mark.
12) What does classroom function mean on a Dormakaba QDB286 deadbolt?
Cylinder outside, thumbturn inside. Staff key the bolt from the corridor side, and anyone inside can throw or retract it by hand without a key. That is why these show up on classrooms, storage rooms, and park and rest stop restrooms, usually mounted above a cylindrical lockset to add a second point of security rather than acting as the only lock on the door. An indicator option is available that shows locked or unlocked from the exterior.
13) Is a Grade 2 deadbolt enough for a commercial door, or should I go Grade 1?
Grade 2 standard duty is the light commercial tier, and the QDB200 series adds attack hardware most Grade 2 bolts skip: a hardened steel roller pin in the bolt against saw attack, two ball bearings against drilling, and a free spinning cylinder collar against wrenching. For an exterior opening on a high traffic building, or where the spec calls Grade 1 outright, step up instead to something like the Falcon D111, a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom deadbolt, or the Corbin Russwin DL3011 Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock, which covers 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors.
14) What is the closest equivalent to the Dormakaba QDB286 from another brand?
The Falcon D211 is the nearest match: Grade 2, medium duty, classroom function cylinder x thumbturn from the D200 series. The Hager 3115 is another Grade 2 cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt, fire rated, in the Schlage C keyway and covering 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, so it keys into the same C keyway system the QDB286 uses on its conventional cylinder. For a less core version to take your own SFIC, the Arrow E61 in SFIC prep less core covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors.
15) Do I need a round or square corner faceplate on the QDB286 deadbolt latch?
Match whatever is already routed in the door edge. A square corner faceplate suits a chiseled square mortise, a round corner one drops into a router cut edge without hand chiseling, and both are orderable on the QDB286. The standard latch faceplate measures 1-1/8 inch (29mm) x 2-1/4 inch (57mm), with a 1 inch (25.4mm) x 2-1/4 inch (57mm) faceplate available if the existing cutout is the narrower size.
16) Can I order a set of Dormakaba QDB286 deadbolts all keyed alike for one building?
Yes. Keying is a required selection on the order: keyed different is standard, keyed alike ties multiple locks to one key for a property manager running a block of units or storage rooms, and none is the choice when you are ordering less cylinder and keying them yourself. Conventional cylinders come in the Schlage C keyway, so they fold into an existing C keyway masterkey system.
17) I need a deadbolt with no key on either side, just a thumbturn. Is the QDB286 that?
No. The QDB286 is cylinder x thumbturn, meaning there is a keyed cylinder on the outside. For a non-keyed exit deadlock with a blank plate outside and a thumbturn inside, use the Arrow E60, a Grade 2 exit deadlock for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. If you want a key on both faces so the bolt cannot be thrown from inside without a key, look at a double cylinder deadbolt such as the Dexter DB2000 double cylinder, Grade 2, 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors.
18) Is a Grade 3 deadbolt an acceptable alternative to the Dormakaba QDB286?
It is a different duty class. The Cal-Royal ED500 is a Grade 3 single cylinder deadbolt with adjustable backset for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Cal-Royal LSD is a Grade 3 single cylinder deadbolt with an ADA ergonomic thumbturn over the same door range. Both operate cylinder x thumbturn, the same as the QDB286, but the QDB286 carries a Grade 2 rating. For a light-traffic interior storage door the Grade 3 body may suit; for an opening specified Grade 2 it will not meet the spec.
19) Are there other Grade 2 deadbolts that take a 2-3/4 inch backset like the Dormakaba QDB286?
The Deltana CL200LA is a Grade 2 single deadbolt built on a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the CL200LAIC is the same body with interchangeable core prep on the same 2-3/4 inch backset. The Accentra D111 is built on a 2-3/8 inch backset and is Grade 1. The QDB286 uses a 2-3/4 inch backset as standard with 2-3/8 inch also offered, so the same part number line covers either bore location.
20) Which deadbolt should I choose over the Dormakaba QDB286 if I want an adjustable backset out of the box?
Several bodies ship adjustable rather than backset-specific. The Cal-Royal ED500 is a Grade 3 single cylinder deadbolt with adjustable backset for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Falcon D111 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with adjustable backset, and the Brinks Raleigh E2401 is a transitional round single cylinder deadbolt with a 4-way adjustable backset. The QDB286 uses an adjustable backset deadbolt latch as well, and is ordered in 2-3/4 inch or 2-3/8 inch.
21) Is the Dormakaba QDB286 the right choice if I want an electronic or keypad deadbolt?
No - the QDB286 is a mechanical deadbolt operated by cylinder and thumbturn. For keypad or electronic operation, the Delaney KP400 is a Grade 2 electronic deadbolt with a programmable remote, the Codelocks CL2200 is an electronic surface deadbolt in brushed steel, medium duty, and the CL2210 is an electronic mortise deadbolt. Note the CL2200 mounts to the door face and the CL2210 takes a mortise pocket, so neither uses the same prep as the QDB286.
22) Are there simpler Grade 2 deadbolts than the Dormakaba QDB286 for a straightforward keyed storage room?
Yes. The Arrow DBX61 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt with cylinder x thumbturn operation in the DBX Series, the Callan 200S-G2 is a Grade 2 single cylinder round trim deadbolt, and the Cal-Royal CB160 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt with a tamper-resistant cylinder guard. The QDB286 covers the same grade and function and adds a free-spinning cylinder collar, hardened steel roller pin and two ball bearings against saw, drill and wrench attack, plus SFIC and less-cylinder options.
23) Can I use the BEST 8T tube or a Baldwin deadbolt spacer in place of the Dormakaba QDB286?
No - neither is a complete lock. The BEST 8T is a tubular deadbolt tube component from the T Series, and the Baldwin Reserve 8BR0618001 is a deadbolt spacer for a double cylinder application. Both are service parts that go into or alongside a lock. The QDB286 is a complete deadbolt with cylinder, thumbturn, bolt and strike, supplied with a 1-1/8 inch x 2-3/4 inch square corner strike.
24) Instead of adding the Dormakaba QDB286 alongside a lockset, is there a single lock with the deadbolt built in?
The Falcon H2101 is a Grade 2 entrance interconnected lock with a single cylinder deadbolt in the H2 Series - the deadbolt and the latch are one assembly on one door prep. The QDB286 is an auxiliary deadbolt, commonly installed above a cylindrical lock to add a second point of security, which means two separate preps in the door.
25) What finishes does the Dormakaba QDB286 deadbolt come in, and will it match the rest of my doors?
Five finishes: 605 bright brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, and 626 satin chrome. Those are BHMA finish numbers, so 626 satin chrome matches the 626 on your existing lever sets and closers and 613 matches oil rubbed bronze trim. The exposed trim is stainless steel with an iron forged cylinder guard underneath the finish.
26) Can the Dormakaba QDB286 be rekeyed without pulling it off the door?
The QDB200 series offers SmartKey, a rekeying system that lets you rekey the lock in place with no need to remove it from the door, plus a key control option. For a property manager turning units between tenants that removes the trip to a locksmith bench. If you run interchangeable cores instead, order the SFIC version and swap the core for the same result.
27) Which deadbolt has a square trim instead of the Dormakaba QDB286 round trim look?
For a square exterior rose, the Bravura 310SC Elite is a Grade 2 contemporary square deadbolt with cylinder x thumbturn operation, the Bravura 910005 is a Grade 2 rectangle single cylinder deadbolt, the Callan 200S is a Grade 3 single cylinder square trim deadbolt, and the Brinks Mendocino E2402 is a contemporary square single cylinder deadbolt with a 4-way adjustable backset. On the QDB286, the square-versus-round choice is the latch faceplate corner, offered square or round, not the trim shape.
28) What is the difference between the Dormakaba QDB286 and a decorative residential deadbolt like the Emtek or Baldwin lines?
The QDB286 is a commercial Grade 2 standard duty deadbolt offered in 605 bright brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. The Emtek #11 Tuscany is a lost wax cast bronze deadbolt with cylinder x thumbturn operation, the Emtek 8323 Modern Disc is a brass double cylinder deadbolt, and the Baldwin Estates 8011 is a contemporary 1-5/8 inch double cylinder deadbolt in the Estate Series. Those are decorative bodies built around appearance; the QDB286 is specified by grade for commercial openings.
