Stanley Security QDB280-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Stanley Security QDB280 deadbolt fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
Yes, but not out of the box. The QDB200 series covers a door range of 1-3/8 inches (35mm) to 2 inches (51mm), and 1-3/8 inch doors require service part 8Q00082 spacer rings. On anything from 1-3/4 up to 2 inches you install as supplied. That 2 inch upper limit is worth noting on thick or clad commercial doors, where most Grade 2 deadbolts stop at 1-3/4.
2) Do I have to pick a backset for the QDB280, or is the latch adjustable?
Pick one. The QDB280 is ordered with either a 2-3/4 inch (70mm) backset, which is the standard, or a 2-3/8 inch (60mm). The 2-3/4 is the usual commercial spec; 2-3/8 is what you tend to find on older residential-prep doors. Measure from the door edge to the center of the cross bore before ordering. Door prep is a 2-1/8 inch (54mm) diameter cross bore either way.
3) Will the QDB280 deadbolt latch into the strike already in my frame?
It depends what is in there. The QDB280 ships with a standard deadbolt strike measuring 1-1/8 inch by 2-3/4 inch with square corners, and the bolt is a full 1 inch (25.4mm) throw with a hardened steel roller inside it. If your frame is already prepped for a 1-1/8 x 2-3/4 deadbolt strike, the new one drops into the same cutout. If the existing pocket is shallower than a 1 inch throw, the bolt will not fully extend and you will need to deepen it. Other strike options are available.
4) Can I use my building's existing small format interchangeable cores with the QDB280?
Yes. Order the SFIC cylinder version, which comes prepped and without a core, and drop in the small format cores you already key across the building. If you would rather stay with a conventional cylinder, it comes in the Schlage "C" keyway. There is also a less cylinder option if you are supplying your own. On the keying side you choose keyed different or keyed alike, and keyed alike is what you want when a group of doors needs to run on one key.
5) Is the Stanley QDB280 deadbolt approved for a fire rated door?
It is UL/cUL listed for 3 hours on "A" label single door applications up to 4 feet by 8 feet, positive pressure rated to UL10C/UBC 7-2 (1997), and also UL10B pressure rated. It carries ANSI/BHMA A156.12 Series (1999) Grade 2 and meets ANSI A117.1 for accessibility, with an ADA compliant thumbturn. It is also hurricane compliant under a Miami DADE N.O.A. For a facility standardizing on a fire rated opening spec, that covers the listing an inspector will ask for.
6) What is a direct Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt equivalent to the Stanley Security QDB280?
The Hager 3215 is the closest straight equivalent. Both are Grade 2 cylinder x thumbturn deadbolts, and the Hager 3215 is described as a single cylinder deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for commercial use, fitting doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The QDB280 covers a wider door range of 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch and offers a 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset. If the opening needs a Schlage C keyway, the Hager 3215's sibling 3115 is a Grade 2 cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt specified with a Schlage C keyway, and the QDB280 is available with a conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder as well.
7) Which deadbolt should be used instead of the QDB280 when the specification calls for Grade 1?
Step up to a Grade 1 single cylinder deadbolt. The Dexter DB1000 single cylinder deadbolt is Grade 1 cylinder x thumbturn and fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch. The Falcon D111 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt in the D100 Series with an adjustable backset. The Accentra D111 is a Grade 1 cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt with a 2-3/8 inch backset fitting doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The QDB280 is a Grade 2 standard duty deadbolt, so it will not satisfy a Grade 1 line item.
8) What deadbolt takes the place of the QDB280 on a glass or sidelite door where a key is needed from both sides?
The QDB280 is a single cylinder deadbolt, keyed outside with a thumbturn inside, so it is not the part for an opening that must be keyed from both faces. The Dexter DB2000 double cylinder deadbolt is Grade 2 and fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Hager 3214 is a Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt with a Schlage C keyway for the same door range. In Grade 1, the Design Hardware D1 Series double cylinder deadbolt is extra heavy duty for 1-3/4 inch doors. Double cylinder deadbolts have egress restrictions in many jurisdictions, so confirm the code for the occupancy before ordering.
9) What are the alternatives to the QDB280 for a facility standardizing on small format interchangeable core?
The QDB280 is available with an SFIC cylinder prep supplied without a core, so existing small format cores can be carried over. Comparable SFIC-prepped deadbolts include the Arrow E61 26D IC, a Grade 2 single cylinder deadlock with SFIC prep less core for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Deltana CL200LAIC, a Grade 2 interchangeable core single deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Delaney LM Series 301702 is a Grade 1 single cylinder less core deadbolt in dull chrome US26D if the job calls for Grade 1.
10) Is a Grade 2 auxiliary deadbolt enough for a commercial entrance, or should I go Grade 1?
The QDB280 is a Grade 2 standard duty deadbolt built for light commercial work: storage rooms, park and rest stop restrooms, offices, and residential doors, usually paired above a cylindrical lockset to add a second point of security. It has attack hardware a plain Grade 2 often lacks, a hardened steel roller pin in the bolt, two ball bearings, and a free-spinning cylinder collar against saw, drill and wrench attack. For a high-traffic main entrance or a school corridor where a Grade 1 is specified, step up instead to something like the Cal-Royal CRB800 heavy duty single cylinder deadbolt or the Dexter DB1000 Grade 1.
11) What is the difference between a single cylinder deadbolt like the QDB280 and a double cylinder one?
The QDB280 is cylinder by thumbturn: key on the outside, a thumbturn on the inside, so anyone inside can get out without a key. That is what most egress codes want on an occupied space. A double cylinder takes a key on both sides, which stops someone reaching through broken glass but traps occupants without a key. If a double cylinder is genuinely what the opening calls for, the Hager 3214 Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt and the Dexter DB2000 double cylinder are the Grade 2 equivalents.
12) Which faceplate do I order for the QDB280 to match the existing mortise in my door edge?
Match the corners to what is already routed. The QDB280 latch faceplate comes with round or square corners, standard size 1-1/8 inch by 2-1/4 inch (29mm x 57mm), with a 1 inch by 2-1/4 inch (25.4mm x 57mm) faceplate also available. A square faceplate in a round-routed edge, or the reverse, means chiseling or a visible gap, so check the door edge before you pick.
13) I need six doors on the same key. How do I order the QDB280 that way?
Select KA, keyed alike, on the keying option and order all six on the same line so they are cut to one key. Keyed different is the standard, which gives every lock its own key. If you are running an SFIC system across the building, take the SFIC prep instead with no keying and pin your own cores. There is also a less cylinder choice if your locksmith is supplying cylinders.
14) What else could I buy instead of the Stanley QDB280 Grade 2 deadbolt?
Straight Grade 2 cylinder by thumbturn equivalents include the Arrow DBX61, the Cal-Royal CB160 with a tamper resistant cylinder guard, the Dexter DB2000 single cylinder rated for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3115, also Schlage C keyway and 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch. The Hager 3215 is a Grade 2 with a 1 inch throw like the QDB280. If you want interchangeable core in a Grade 2, the Deltana CL200LAIC takes a core and comes with a 2-3/4 inch backset. Where the QDB200 series stands apart in that group is its stated 2 inch upper door thickness, wider than the 1-3/4 inch limit most of these carry.
15) What is the difference between the QDB280 and the Corbin Russwin DL3011 deadlock?
They are not the same style of lock. The QDB280 is a bored auxiliary deadbolt in cylinder x thumbturn function, keyed outside with a turn inside, prepped in a 2-1/8 inch cross bore. The Corbin Russwin DL3011 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock in cylinder x blank function for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch, meaning the inside face carries a blank plate rather than a thumbturn. The DL3211 is the same cylinder x blank arrangement for 1-3/4 inch doors. If the inside must be operable without a key, the cylinder x blank deadlocks are the wrong function.
16) Is there a lighter duty alternative to the QDB280 for a low traffic door?
Yes. The Cal-Royal ED500 is a Grade 3 single cylinder cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt with an adjustable backset for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Cal-Royal LSD is a Grade 3 single cylinder deadbolt with an ADA ergonomic thumbturn over the same door range. The Callan Model 200S is a Grade 3 single cylinder deadbolt with square trim. The QDB280 is a Grade 2 standard duty commercial deadbolt with a 1 inch steel throw bolt and hardened steel roller pin, so a Grade 3 unit is a different level of attack resistance for a door that does not need it.
17) Which deadbolt works instead of the QDB280 on a restroom or exit door where no key should be needed?
Use a non-keyed deadlock. The Arrow E60 is a Grade 2 exit deadlock in blank plate x thumbturn function for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, so the door throws and retracts from the inside with no cylinder outside. The Callan Model 205S is a Grade 3 one-sided half-bore deadbolt, which suits a door with no outside operation at all. The QDB280 is keyed outside with a thumbturn inside, so it always carries an exterior cylinder unless ordered less cylinder.
18) Does the Dormakaba M1960 or D900 do the same job as the QDB280?
No, they are different lock cases. The QDB280 is a bored deadbolt that installs in a 2-1/8 inch cross bore. The Dormakaba M1960 is an M1000 Series single cylinder deadbolt in cylinder x turn function supplied with no trim, and the D900 is a small case mortise deadbolt in cylinder x thumbturn, keyed different with SC keyways. A mortise deadbolt needs a pocket cut into the door edge, so neither drops into a door already bored for the QDB280.
19) What replaces the QDB280 if the door needs keypad or credential access rather than a key?
Move to an electronic deadbolt. The Delaney KP400 is a Grade 2 electronic deadbolt with a programmable remote. The Codelocks CL2200 is a medium duty electronic surface deadbolt in brushed steel, and the CL2210 is an electronic mortise deadbolt. For RFID credentials, the Dormakaba Saffire LX-D is an RFID electronic deadbolt with BLE and electronic lock override, and the Nova-D is an RFID multihousing smart electronic deadbolt. The QDB280 is a mechanical Grade 2 deadbolt operated by key outside and thumbturn inside.
20) How does the QDB280 compare with the Arrow DBX61 and Cal-Royal CB160 Grade 2 deadbolts?
All three are Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolts in cylinder x thumbturn function. The Arrow DBX61 is a DBX Series Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt, and the Cal-Royal CB160 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt with a tamper-resistant cylinder guard. The QDB280 carries a free-spinning cylinder collar and iron forged cylinder guard with a 1 inch steel throw bolt, and covers doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch with a choice of 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset and round or square faceplate corners.
21) Can the QDB280 be used where a combined latch and deadbolt in one lock is required?
No. The QDB280 is an auxiliary deadbolt, so it holds the door but does not latch it and is commonly installed above a cylindrical lock for a second point of security. If one unit must do both, the Falcon H2101 is a Grade 2 entrance interconnected lock with a single cylinder deadbolt in the H2 Series. For a mortise lock already in the door that handles both, the Arrow 460 mortise lock strike serves latchbolt and deadbolt functions with a straight lip on 1-3/4 inch doors.
22) Which deadbolt suits a door thicker than what the Bravura 310B or Callan 200S-G2 handle, alongside the QDB280?
The QDB280 covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, with service part 8Q00082 spacer rings required at 1-3/8 inch. Among Grade 2 peers, the Bravura 310B Elite and the Callan Model 200S-G2 are both Grade 2 single cylinder cylinder x thumbturn deadbolts in round trim. For doors beyond 2 inch, the Corbin Russwin DL3011 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock rated for 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors, though it is cylinder x blank rather than thumbturn.
23) Are the Emtek and Baldwin deadbolts substitutes for the QDB280 on a commercial opening?
They are a different class of product. The Emtek 2050 and 2051 are European mortise deadbolts with an integrated roller latch in square and round trim, and the Emtek #11 Tuscany is a lost wax cast bronze deadbolt. Baldwin's Reserve contemporary round and square deadbolts and the Estate 8011 are double cylinder units. The QDB280 is a Grade 2 commercial deadbolt certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.12 and UL/cUL listed 3 hour for A label single door applications, which the decorative trim lines are not described as carrying. For a fire rated commercial opening, stay with a graded commercial deadbolt.
24) What finishes does the Stanley QDB280 deadbolt come in, and will it match the rest of my building's hardware?
Five finishes: 605 bright brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, and 626 satin chrome. Those are BHMA finish numbers, so if your existing levers and closers are specified by number you can match on the number rather than by eye. 626 satin chrome is the workhorse across most commercial buildings. The exposed trim is stainless steel with an iron forged cylinder guard.
25) Can I tell from outside whether the door is locked with the QDB280?
An indicator option is available on the QDB200 series that shows locked or unlocked status from the exterior. That is the feature property managers want on public restrooms and single-occupancy rooms, and it is why these turn up in rest stop and state park restrooms and storage rooms. Specify the indicator at the time of order.
26) Does the QDB280 work in a hurricane zone opening?
The QDB200 series is hurricane compliant under a Miami DADE Notice of Acceptance. If your opening is in a wind-borne debris region and the deadbolt has to be part of the assembly, that acceptance is what the AHJ will want to see against the door and frame's own approval.
27) Which Grade 2 deadbolt matches the QDB280 when the job needs a fixed 2-3/4 inch backset in one part number?
The Deltana CL200LA is a Grade 2 single cylinder cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt built to a 2-3/4 inch backset, so the backset is settled by the part number. The QDB280 is ordered by backset as well, in 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch, and ships with an adjustable backset deadbolt latch. If the same opening needs Grade 1 at 2-3/4 inch handling, the Deltana CL200LM is a Grade 1 single cylinder cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt.
28) Is the BEST 8T tubular deadbolt tube component an alternative to the QDB280?
No. The BEST 8T is a T Series tubular deadbolt tube component, a part of a deadbolt assembly rather than a complete lock. The QDB280 is a complete Grade 2 auxiliary deadbolt supplied with a 1-1/8 inch by 2-3/4 inch square corner strike, a 1-1/8 inch by 2-1/4 inch faceplate, and a 1 inch throw bolt. Ordering the 8T against a QDB280 line item leaves the opening without trim or a cylinder.
