SAM RF Encoder With Extra Memory – Power Cord NOT Included

The R21220 is the encoder base station that makes all of that work. It's the hardware that sits at the management office, connects to the PC running SAM RF software, and programs every key credential in the system. New resident moves in: a key is encoded on the R21220. Resident moves out: that key is deactivated on the R21220. Resident loses a key: the lost key is deleted and a new one encoded, without re-programming the lock.

The R21220 includes extra memory over the standard encoder, allowing more data storage on the unit for larger property deployments. Power cord is not included and must be sourced separately. The Handheld Utility Device is also not included but is available as a separate component for field programming without returning to the management office. Ships within 4-6 weeks as a special-order item. For all Dormakaba electronic access control hardware.

 

How the InSync SAM RF System Works

The InSync system distributes access control information through the key itself, not through a network or panel. When a property administrator programs a new key using the R21220 encoder and SAM RF software, that key carries the programming data. The first time the new key is used in an InSync lock, the lock updates its own access list. This "sneaker net" approach means the locks don't need to be connected to a network or wired to a central controller. Programming reaches each lock as residents enter, automatically.

When a resident moves out, their key is deactivated in the SAM RF software. The next time any valid key (typically the new resident's key or a master key) is used in that lock, the deactivated key is removed from the lock's recognition list. The R21220 is the critical hardware that initiates every one of these credential transactions.

InSync Credential Technology

InSync keys use HiTag RFID as the base technology. Dual Technology keys add a second chip (MIFARE or DESFire) to the same credential, which allows the single InSync key to also work at common area RFID readers that use MIFARE or DESFire rather than HiTag. This means a resident can use one key for their unit door (HiTag via InSync lock), the building's access control gate reader (MIFARE via the gate reader), and any other reader in the building, without carrying multiple credentials.

1) Does the Dormakaba R21220 encoder come with a power cord?
No power cord. The R21220 SAM RF encoder ships as the base station only, so you'll need to source an AC adapter separately. Computer cables aren't included either, and you need one to connect the encoder to the PC running SAM RF software. Budget both into the order or the unit sits on the desk doing nothing on day one.
2) Which Dormakaba InSync locks will the R21220 encoder program?
The R21220 encodes keys for the InSync RD01, RD03 and RD05 locks and all InSync series deadbolts. It reads, writes and deletes the RFID credentials those locks recognize. If your doors are a different Dormakaba platform, this is not the encoder for that system.
3) Do I have to reprogram the locks when a resident loses a key?
No. Delete the lost key in SAM RF, encode a replacement on the R21220, and hand it over. InSync distributes access data through the credential itself: the first time the new key is presented, the lock updates its own list and drops the deleted one. No network run to the door, no panel, no trip to each unit. Same process on a move-out, the deactivated key clears the next time any valid key is used in that lock.
4) Can one InSync key also open the building gate or common area readers?
Only if you order Dual Technology keys. Standard InSync credentials use HiTag RFID, which is what the unit door locks read. Dual Technology keys add a second chip (MIFARE or DESFire) on the same card so the resident can use one credential at the unit door and at common area readers that run MIFARE or DESFire. The R21220 supports both HiTag and Dual Technology credentials, so the encoder is not the limiting factor, the key you buy is.
5) What software do I need to run the R21220 SAM RF encoder?
Dormakaba SAM RF (Security Access Management, Radio Frequency), running on a PC at the management office. The R21220 is the hardware end of that setup: the software holds the resident and key records, the encoder writes them onto the credential. Connection to the PC takes a computer cable, which is not supplied with the unit.
6) What is the difference between the R21220 and the standard R21200 encoder?
Memory. The R21220 carries extra memory over the standard R21200, which allows more data storage on the unit itself. That is the reason to pick it for a larger property deployment rather than a small building. Functionally both are the SAM RF encoder base station.
7) Do I need a handheld unit as well as the R21220 to program InSync locks in the field?
