DynaLock DYK5325 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the DynaLock 5325 transformer power a 24VDC maglock?
The 5325 puts out 24VDC at 1.5 amps from a 120VAC input, so it suits a 24VDC device drawing under 1.5 amps. Rectification is built in, so you don't need a separate rectifier between the transformer and a DC lock. Add up the draw of everything on the circuit before you commit to it.
2) Does the DynaLock 5325 need to be hardwired, or does it plug into a wall outlet?
It plugs straight into a standard 120VAC convenience outlet, which is the whole point of the 5300 Series: low voltage power where an outlet is close to the device being powered. Load side connections are screw terminals for field hook-up, so you land your lock or strike wiring there rather than splicing a pigtail.
3) What is the difference between the 5325 and the other DynaLock 5300 Series transformers?
The 5300 Series is a family of plug-in transformers with secondary outputs of 12 or 24 volts, AC or DC, and the DC models carry a built-in rectifier bridge. The 5325 is the 24VDC, 1.5 amp version. If your device is 12 volt, or wants AC rather than DC, you want a different model in the series, not this one.
4) There is no wall outlet near the door. What do I use instead of a plug-in transformer?
A plug-in unit like the DynaLock 5325 is specified where a standard 120 VAC convenience outlet is in close proximity to the device being powered. Where there is no outlet at the opening, the MS Sedco 12024 is an open frame 120V to 24V transformer with screw mount, so it can be fastened inside an enclosure, a junction box, or a door control cabinet and hard wired to a 120V branch circuit instead of a cord and plug. Same 24 volt low voltage result at the door, different way of getting line power to it.
5) Is the MS Sedco 12024 a drop-in replacement for the DynaLock 5325?
Not on a like-for-like basis. The MS Sedco 12024 is a 120V to 24V open frame unit with an AC secondary and a screw mount body, while the DynaLock 5325 delivers 24VDC at 1.5 amps from a cord-and-plug body that lands on a 120VAC outlet. The 24 volt figure matches, but the output form does not: a device that requires DC will not run correctly on the AC secondary of the 12024, and the 12024 also needs a mounting point and a hard wired 120V feed rather than an outlet.
6) I already have an AC transformer at the door but the lock needs DC. Do I need to replace it with the DynaLock 5325?
There are two ways to get there. The DynaLock 5325 handles it in one component: it takes 120VAC and delivers 24VDC at 1.5 amps through a built-in rectifier bridge, with screw terminals for field hook-up. The other route is to keep the existing AC transformer and add a Trine SR-1 silicon rectifier downstream of it to convert the AC secondary to DC for the lock. The 5325 is a single-device swap at the outlet; the SR-1 is an added component in an installation that is otherwise already wired.
7) I already have an AC transformer at the door. Can I just add a rectifier instead of buying the DynaLock 5325?
That works if the existing AC transformer has the voltage and current your lock needs. A Trine SR-1 silicon rectifier converts that AC output to DC for a DC-only device. Buying the 5325 instead gets you one part doing both jobs, since its rectifier bridge is built in and it lands at 24VDC, 1.5 amps out of the box.
8) Will a Trine SR-1 by itself power a 24VDC electric strike?
No. The Trine SR-1 is a silicon rectifier, a component that converts an AC input to DC. It does not step 120 volt line power down to low voltage, so it cannot be plugged into a wall outlet and wired to a strike on its own. For that job the DynaLock 5325 is the complete unit: 120VAC in, 24VDC out at 1.5 amps, with screw terminals for field hook-up. The SR-1 belongs after a low voltage AC transformer, not in place of one.
9) Is the DynaLock 5325 rated for commercial door hardware use?
Yes, DynaLock lists the 5325 as a commercial product, and it is a powered electronic access control component rather than a residential doorbell part. It gets used to feed electric locks, strikes and similar low voltage door devices.
