1) Does the Eaton 55 Series retroreflective sensor come with a reflector?
No. The 55 Series right angle sensor ships without a reflector, and you need one to make it work. The 30 ft sensing range is based on a 3 inch retroreflector, so order that target separately and mount it opposite the sensor head.
2) What are the two connection options on the Eaton 1455AD sensor?
Two ways to land it: a 4-pin mini connector version (1455AD6507) for quick disconnect on machines already wired with mini cordsets, or a factory cable version (1455AD6517) with a 6.6 ft (2 m) pigtail. Pick the connector version if you want to swap the head without pulling wire.
3) Can this sensor be washed down or used outdoors?
Environmental rating covers NEMA 1, 3, 4, 6, 12 and 13, which takes in outdoor rain exposure, hosedown, oil and coolant, and temporary submersion. Operating range runs -40 F to 158 F, so unheated warehouses and freezer dock areas are within spec. It is CSA Certified.
4) Will this sensor reliably detect shiny or reflective packaging?
Be careful here. The 55 Series operates in non-polarized retroreflective mode, meaning it reads any light bounced back to the receiver. A mirror-finish target, shrink wrap or a bright metal can reflect enough light to look like the reflector and cause a missed detection. For shiny targets a polarized retroreflective or a diffuse proximity sensor is the better pick; for matte cartons, cases and totes the non-polarized version is fine and gives more available range.
5) Does the Eaton 1455AD sensor need external short circuit protection?
No added protection is required on the output. The sensor has auto reset short circuit protection built in, so a shorted output load shuts the drive down and it recovers on its own once the fault is cleared, instead of destroying the transistor.
6) How do I tell if the sensor is seeing its reflector during setup?
There is a red output status LED on the housing. Aim the head at the 3 inch retroreflector and watch the LED change state as you break and remake the beam. That is the quickest way to confirm alignment over a long 30 ft shot before you commit the bracket.
7) What is the lens and cable made of on this Eaton photoelectric sensor?
The lens is nylon and the cord is PVC jacketed. Nylon holds up to knocks on a conveyor line better than glass, but check chemical exposure if the sensor sits in a solvent or aggressive washdown area, since PVC cable is the limiting material there.
