B-LINE AH1223W – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Arrow Hart AH1223W switch control one light from two separate locations?
Yes. The AH1223W is a three-way toggle switch, so it pairs with a second three-way at the other end of a hallway, stairwell, or room to control the same load from either spot. Wiring one three-way and one single-pole together will not work; you need a matching three-way at the second box.
2) Will this Arrow Hart toggle switch work on a 277V lighting circuit?
Yes. The AH1223W is rated 120/277V at 20A, so it handles both 120V branch circuits and 277V commercial fluorescent or LED lighting runs off a 480/277V system. That dual rating is why it gets specified for warehouse and plant lighting rather than a residential-grade 120V-only switch.
3) What wire size can I land on this 20A industrial toggle switch?
Terminals accept #14 through #10 AWG copper. That covers 14 AWG on a 15A circuit, 12 AWG on a 20A circuit, and 10 AWG where a long run has been upsized for voltage drop. Connections are screw terminals, wired from the back or the side, so you can either poke straight conductors into the back wire holes and tighten, or loop them under the screw heads.
4) Three-way but single-pole: which is the AH1223W, and does it matter for my wiring?
It is a single-pole, three-way device: one switched leg, with a common terminal plus two travelers. Wire the common to the feed or to the fixture depending on which end of the pair it sits at, and run the two travelers between the boxes. If you need a simple on/off at one location only, this is the wrong device, use a single-pole switch instead.
5) Can I replace a worn three-way switch in an existing box with this one without rewiring?
If the existing device is a three-way with back or side screw terminals and the conductors are #14 to #10, the AH1223W drops into the same box on the same conductors. Move the common to the common terminal and the two travelers to the traveler pair, and verify your circuit is 120V or 277V, both of which it covers.
6) Is the Arrow Hart AH1223W UL listed for commercial and institutional jobs?
It is cULus Listed, which covers both US and Canadian requirements, so it satisfies inspector and spec-sheet requirements on either side of the border. That, plus the industrial-grade 20A/277V rating, is what makes it acceptable where a residential switch would be rejected.
7) Is an industrial grade switch worth it over a standard spec grade for high-traffic buildings?
For corridors, restrooms, and shop areas that get switched dozens of times a day, the industrial-grade build is the point. The AH1223W uses brass terminal hardware and a polycarbonate body, and it is rated for industrial application at 20A. Property managers standardising a portfolio usually put these on the high-cycle openings and save lighter switches for low-use offices and closets.
