B-LINE 3031V – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Arrow Hart 3031V toggle switch be used as a motor disconnect or manual motor starter switch?
The 3031V is rated for motor control loads at 30A, 120/277V, so it works as a manual control or local disconnect switch for motor loads within that rating. It is a single-pole switch, so it breaks one ungrounded conductor only. For a three-phase or two-hot-leg motor circuit you need a two-pole or three-pole device instead.
2) Will a 30 amp Arrow Hart 3031V toggle switch work on a 277 volt lighting circuit?
Yes. The 3031V carries a 120/277V rating, which covers commercial 277V lighting branch circuits as well as standard 120V. Listed load types include LED, fluorescent, CFL, halogen, incandescent, ELV and MLV, so it handles both line-voltage and low-voltage-transformer lighting.
3) What wire size does the 3031V industrial toggle switch accept, and can I back-wire it?
Terminals take #14 through #10 AWG copper, which is what a 30A branch circuit needs. Wiring is back and side with screw terminals, so you can either land the conductor on the side screw or bring it in the back. Note these are screw terminals, not push-in quick-connects, so strip and torque accordingly.
4) Can I use this switch for a three-way application controlling a fan from two locations?
No. Model 3031V is single-pole, meaning on/off from one location only. Three-way control from two points requires a pair of 3-way switches, and four-way needs a 4-way between them. Buy the 3-way version of this Arrow Hart 30A series if you need two-location control.
5) Is the 3031V a spec grade or industrial grade switch, and is it UL listed?
It is an industrial grade device and cULus Listed, so it carries both US and Canadian listings. Body is polycarbonate with brass terminal material. Industrial grade is the step above residential and spec grade for high-cycle commercial and plant use, which is what a 30A motor-rated toggle is normally bought for.
6) Will a 30A Arrow Hart toggle switch fit a standard single-gang box and a normal toggle wall plate?
It mounts flush with a strap measuring 4.19 by 1.005 by 1.3 inches, so it drops into a standard single-gang opening. Bear in mind a 30A toggle body is bulkier than a 15A or 20A switch, so allow box fill and depth for the 1.3 inch body plus #10 conductors. The toggle opening is the usual toggle style, not decorator/rocker, so order a toggle plate rather than a Decora plate.
7) Is a 30A toggle switch overkill for a 20A fan or lighting circuit?
Not a problem electrically. A switch may be rated above the circuit it serves, and the 30A rating on the 3031V gives headroom on motor and ballast inrush that a 15A or 20A switch does not have. What matters is that it is rated at or above the load and the branch circuit, and that terminals suit the conductor, here #14 to #10 AWG. If the circuit is a straight 15A lighting load with #14 wire, a standard 20A industrial toggle is the cheaper fit.
8) Does the 3031V match the ivory devices already installed in my building?
The 3031V comes in ivory only. If the rest of the openings in the space are white, light almond or gray, this will not match and you would need the equivalent Arrow Hart 3031 in that color.
