A vertical outside bend carries the tray run over an obstruction or up a change in elevation, with the bend turning away from the cable side. This Eaton B-Line 6A-18-45VO12 fitting turns the run through 45 degrees on a 12 inch radius, so cables ride the curve instead of breaking over a sharp corner. It matches 18 inch wide, 6 inch deep ladder tray.

It depends which way the tray turns relative to the cable. An outside bend, like this 45 degree 12 inch radius fitting, is used where the tray turns away from the cables, so the cables run along the outside of the curve. An inside bend turns toward the cable side. Getting it backwards leaves the run pointing the wrong direction, so check your elevation drawing before ordering.

The fitting measures 13.607 inches along its length, so that is the space it occupies between the two straight sections it joins. Deduct that from your straight tray takeoff when laying out the run.

Aluminum. It is lighter to handle at height (the fitting weighs 6.8 lb) and is the usual choice where corrosion is a concern or where you want to keep hanger loading down. If your existing run is galvanized steel, use a steel fitting instead so you are not mixing metals at the splice.
