B-LINE B172YZN – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the B172YZN come with bolts and nuts?
No. The B172YZN is the splice clevis alone, four holes drilled. You order channel nuts and hex bolts separately, sized to the channel you are splicing, and you'll need four sets per fitting.
2) Is the B172YZN splice heavy enough for a structural strut joint or is it a light-duty plate?
It's a heavy plate, not sheet stock. The steel is 7/32 inch thick and the fitting weighs 2.66 lb on its own, which is why it gets used to splice B22 and B52A channel rather than light single-channel runs.
3) Can I use the yellow zinc B172YZN splice clevis outdoors or in a wet area?
Yellow zinc chromate is a plated indoor finish. It holds up fine in dry mechanical rooms, electrical rooms and covered interior spaces, but for rooftop, exterior or washdown work you want a hot dip galvanized or stainless splice fitting instead.
4) What is a splice clevis actually used for on a strut run?
It joins two lengths of channel end to end so a run continues without a break, or ties a channel into a fitting at a pivot-style connection. On the B172YZN you bolt through four holes, two into each channel, which puts the load through the steel plate rather than the joint itself.
5) Is the B-Line B172YZN UL listed or carry a code rating?
The B172YZN is a plain steel strut fitting sold without a product certification attached to it. Treat it as a structural support accessory and follow the channel manufacturer's load tables for the B22 or B52A run it goes on.
6) What part number do I order for the yellow zinc four hole strut splice clevis?
Order Eaton B-Line B172YZN. The YZN suffix is the yellow zinc chromate finish; the base fitting is the four hole splice clevis in 7/32 inch steel.
