B-LINE 1086 SCGV – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can a NEMA 1 galvanized junction box like the B-Line 1086 SCGV be used outdoors or in a wash-down area?
No. The 1086 SCGV carries a NEMA 1 rating, which is indoor, dry-location use only. It gives protection against incidental contact and falling dirt, not rain, hose-down, dust or oil. For an outdoor wall, a loading dock, or a kitchen that gets washed down, you need a NEMA 3R, 4 or 4X enclosure instead. Indoors in a mechanical room, electrical room or above a ceiling, NEMA 1 is the normal choice.
2) How many knockouts does the 1086 SCGV enclosure have and where are they?
There are five knockouts on each side, five on the top and five on the bottom. That lets you bring conduit in from more than one direction without punching the box in the field, which matters when it is used as a pull or splice point with runs arriving from different walls. Unused knockouts have to be closed with a listed plug to keep the enclosure intact.
3) How does this B-Line junction box mount to the wall, and is hardware included?
It is a surface mount enclosure with thru holes in the back for fastening straight to the wall or to a structural member. Because they are thru holes rather than external mounting feet, the fasteners pass into the wiring space, so use a sealing or shouldered fastener and keep the heads clear of conductors. Anchors and screws for your particular wall type are selected separately, since the right fastener depends on whether you are landing on block, drywall with backing, or steel stud.
4) Is the cover on the 1086 SCGV hinged or screw-on, and how does it come off during service?
It is a screw cover, not a hinged door. The cover is retained with plated screws and has keyhole slots, so you can back the screws out part way and lift the cover off without fully removing every screw, then hang it back on the slots to reinstall. Plan on removing the cover completely for access, so leave clearance in front of the box. If your crew needs a door that swings and stays captive, look for a hinged-cover enclosure instead.
5) What gauge steel is the 1086 SCGV box, and will it hold up in a plant or mechanical room?
The body is 16 gauge galvanized steel. That is a commercial-weight wall, stiff enough that the box will not oil-can when you tighten conduit connectors or pull cable through it, and heavy enough for a mechanical room, plant floor or back-of-house corridor where a light-gauge sheet box would dent. It is an unfinished galvanized surface, grey in appearance, so there is no paint to chip.
6) Can I paint the B-Line 1086 SCGV box to match a finished space?
It ships unfinished galvanized, grey, with no factory paint. Galvanized steel can be field painted, but it needs a primer formulated for galvanizing or the topcoat will not hold. If the box is going somewhere it will be seen and you want colour out of the carton, a factory-painted enclosure is the cleaner route than field finishing this one.
