B-LINE 12104 SC – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can a NEMA 1 screw cover junction box like the B-Line 12104 SC be used outdoors or in a wash-down area?
No. The 12104 SC carries a NEMA Type 1 rating, which is indoor, dry-location use only. It gives protection against incidental contact and falling dirt, with no rating against rain, hosedown, dust or oil. For a damp or outdoor wall, or anywhere subject to washdown, you need a Type 3R, 4 or 4X enclosure instead. Indoors in mechanical rooms, electrical closets and above ceilings is where this one belongs.
2) Does this B-Line junction box come with knockouts already punched, or do I have to drill it?
Knockouts are factory punched. The 12104 SC has 5 side knockouts plus 4 top and 4 bottom knockouts, so you can bring conduit in from either end and from the sides without putting a hole saw to the box. If your run needs an entry where there is no knockout, you drill it yourself in the 16 gauge steel.
3) What size is the B-Line 12104 SC junction box?
It measures 12 inches high, 10 inches long (depth dimension in the catalog data) and 4 inches wide, so it is a tall, shallow box that suits a narrow run of wall between studs or conduit stubs. Body is 16 gauge carbon steel and the whole assembly weighs 7.2 lb, light enough for one person to hold while driving the mounting screws.
4) How does the B-Line 12104 SC mount to the wall, and is hardware included?
Surface mount, through the back of the box. It is supplied with thru holes in the back panel, so you fasten straight to the wall or strut with your own anchors or screws sized to the substrate. The mounting fasteners themselves are not part of the box, so pick up masonry anchors, toggles or self-tappers to match what you are fixing into.
5) Screw cover or hinged cover for a junction box I will need to open often?
The 12104 SC is a screw cover box, which means the cover comes fully off every time and you handle loose screws at the ceiling. That is fine for a pull box or splice point you open rarely, and it gives a cleaner, tamper-resistant face. If your box houses controls, relays or terminal blocks you open weekly, choose a hinged cover enclosure instead. B-Line does soften the screw cover job here: the cover has keyhole slots so it hangs on partly backed-out screws while you line up the rest, and the screws are plated.
6) What color and finish is the B-Line 12104 SC, and will it match the other enclosures in my electrical room?
Painted carbon steel in ANSI 61 grey, which is the standard grey used on most commercial panelboards, disconnects and control enclosures, so it will read as a match alongside them. Being painted steel rather than galvanized, keep it out of damp locations where the coating can be scratched and rust.
7) Is a 16 gauge steel junction box heavy enough duty for a commercial install?
Yes. 16 gauge carbon steel is the normal body thickness for commercial NEMA 1 screw cover boxes of this size and it will take conduit entries and field drilling without the walls oiling-canning. At 7.2 lb the 12104 SC is still light enough to hold up with one hand while you start the mounting screws.
8) What is the exact part number to order this B-Line box, and where is it made?
Order it as B-Line (Eaton) model 12104 SC, an SC series screw cover enclosure. It is made in the US.
