B-LINE 1284 SC NK – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the B-Line 1284 SC NK junction box be used outdoors or in a washdown area?
No. The 1284 SC NK is a NEMA Type 1 enclosure, which means indoor use only, for protection against dust and incidental contact. It has no gasket rating for water. For outdoor, wet, or hose-down locations you need a NEMA 3R, 4, or 4X box instead.
2) What are the actual box dimensions on the B-Line 1284 screw cover junction box?
It runs 12 inches high, 8 inches wide, and 4 inches deep. The 4 inch depth is what usually decides the job, since it sets how much room you have behind the cover for splices, terminal blocks, or a wire trough turn.
3) Does this B-Line 1284 box come with knockouts for conduit?
No knockouts. The 1284 SC NK is a blank box, so you drill or punch your own conduit entries wherever the run lands. That is the advantage of an NK box on a field-routed job, but it does mean you need a hole punch or step bit on site. If you want factory conduit openings, order a knockout version instead.
4) How is the B-Line 1284 SC NK mounted to a wall?
Surface mount, using thru holes in the back of the box. You fasten straight through the back pan into the wall or strut, so anchors or machine screws are on you, they are not supplied. At 6.2 pounds empty, standard toggle or masonry anchors handle it fine.
5) Is the 1284 SC NK enclosure UL listed?
Yes, it carries UL 50 certification, the standard for enclosures for electrical equipment. That is what most inspectors and institutional spec writers look for on an indoor junction box.
6) How does the cover come off, and can it be removed one-handed?
The cover is screw-fastened with plated screws, and it has keyhole slots so you can back the screws out part way and lift the cover off without fully removing them. Handy overhead, but a screw cover is not a quick-access design. If techs need to open it repeatedly, a hinged or latched enclosure is the better call.
7) What gauge steel is this junction box, and will it rust in a damp mechanical room?
The body is 16 gauge carbon steel with a painted finish in ANSI 61 grey. Painted carbon steel holds up in dry indoor spaces but will corrode where there is condensation or chemical exposure. For damp or corrosive rooms, step up to a stainless or non-metallic enclosure.
8) Is this box big enough to serve as a pull box or splice point on a branch circuit?
With a 12 by 8 inch back pan and 4 inches of depth, it gives room for splices, a small terminal strip, or a conduit pull. Conduit fill and pull-box sizing still come from your own conductor count and raceway size per code, and since it ships with no knockouts you set the entry locations yourself to get the straight or angle pull geometry you need.
9) Will the grey on this B-Line box match the other enclosures already on my wall?
It is finished in ANSI 61 grey, the standard industrial enclosure colour used across most panelboards, disconnects, and control cabinets. So it will read as a match next to typical existing gear without repainting.
