B-LINE 12106 SC NK – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Eaton B-Line 12106 SC NK junction box be used outdoors or in a wash-down area?
No. The 12106 SC NK is a NEMA Type 1 enclosure, which is for indoor use only, protecting against incidental contact with the enclosed equipment and falling dirt. It offers no rating against rain, hose-down, dust or corrosive environments. For a damp or exterior location you need a Type 3R or Type 4 enclosure instead.
2) What are the actual box dimensions of the B-Line 12106 junction box?
The box measures 12 inches high, 10 inches wide and 6 inches deep, which is where the 12106 designation comes from. That 6 inch depth is what gives you room to make and dress conductors behind a screw cover rather than fighting a shallow pull box.
3) Does the 12106 SC NK come with knockouts, or do I have to drill my own conduit entries?
NK means no knockouts. The box ships blank, so you punch or drill conduit entries exactly where your runs land. That is the usual choice on a pull or junction box when you want the openings to match the job rather than a factory pattern, but it does mean you need a knockout punch on site.
4) Is the B-Line 12106 SC NK UL listed for an inspected commercial job?
Yes, it is built to UL 50, the standard covering enclosures for electrical equipment, and carries a NEMA Type 1 rating. That is the combination an inspector expects on an indoor junction or pull box in a commercial building. It is also made in the US.
5) How does this B-Line box mount to the wall?
Surface mount, using thru holes in the back of the box, so it fastens flat to a wall, backboard or strut with your own anchors or screws. Fasteners are not part of the box. The cover also has keyhole slots, so you can leave the cover screws started and drop it into place one-handed while you set it.
6) Is the cover hinged or removable on the 12106 SC NK?
It is a screw cover, not hinged. The cover lifts off completely once the plated screws are backed out, which gives you full access to the interior for pulling and splicing. If you want a door you can swing open for routine access, look at a hinged cover enclosure rather than a screw cover box.
7) What gauge steel is this junction box, and will it rust in an unconditioned space?
The body is 16 gauge carbon steel with a painted finish in ANSI 61 grey. Painted carbon steel is fine for dry indoor mechanical and electrical rooms. In a humid, coastal or wash-down area the paint will eventually give up, and you should be specifying stainless or a coated Type 4X enclosure instead.
8) Will this grey enclosure match the other B-Line panels already installed in my building?
The finish is ANSI 61 grey paint, which is the standard grey used across most commercial electrical enclosures and panels, so it will read as a match alongside existing gear in a mechanical or electrical room. Ordering the same finish across a facility is the simplest way to keep a fleet of boxes consistent.
