B-LINE 18184 SC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can a NEMA 1 screw cover junction box like the B-Line 18184 SC be used outdoors or in a washdown area?
No. The 18184 SC carries a NEMA Type 1 rating, which is indoor use only, for protection against incidental contact and falling dirt. It gives no protection against water, oil, or dust ingress, so outdoor, damp, washdown, or dusty industrial locations need a gasketed NEMA 3R, 4, or 12 enclosure instead. Keep this one in dry indoor electrical rooms, corridors, and mechanical spaces.
2) Does this B-Line junction box come with knockouts already punched, or do I have to drill it?
Knockouts are already provided: 9 on the sides, 9 on the top, and 9 on the bottom. That lets you bring conduit in from three directions without punching steel in the field. If your run needs an entry where there is no knockout, you would still be drilling or punching that one location yourself.
3) How does the 18184 SC mount to a wall, and is mounting hardware part of it?
The enclosure is surface mounted through thru holes in the back of the box, so you fasten it directly to the wall or to strut with your own anchors sized to the substrate. Anchors and bolts are not part of the enclosure. The cover also has keyhole slots, which lets you hang the cover on partially driven screws while you line up the rest, useful when you are working alone on an 18 by 18 lid.
4) What are the actual box dimensions of the B-Line 18184 SC junction box?
It is 18 inches high by 18 inches wide with a 4 inch depth, so you get a large square wiring space on a shallow 4 inch back-box. That shallow depth matters if you are pulling large conductors or stacking terminal blocks, you have room across the face but only 4 inches front to back. Steel weight is 15.7 lb, light enough for a one-man surface mount.
5) Screw cover versus hinged door enclosure, which should I spec for a junction box?
A screw cover box like the 18184 SC is the right choice for a pull point or splice box you rarely open: the cover comes fully off with plated screws, giving unobstructed access to all four corners for pulling and terminating. If the box houses devices, controls, or anything requiring routine inspection, a hinged door enclosure is easier to live with because the cover stays attached. For straight junction and pull duty, the screw cover is the standard.
6) What gauge steel and finish is the B-Line 18184 SC, and will it hold up in an unfinished mechanical room?
Body is carbon steel at 16 gauge with a painted finish in ANSI 61 grey. That is the standard utility grey used across commercial electrical gear, so it blends with panels and gutters already in the room. Painted carbon steel is fine for dry indoor mechanical and electrical spaces; it is not a corrosion-resistant finish, so damp or chemical exposure calls for stainless or a coated NEMA 4X enclosure.
