B-LINE 36248 HC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can a NEMA 1 junction box like the B-Line 36248 HC be mounted outdoors or in a washdown area?
No. The 36248 HC carries a NEMA Type 1 rating, which is indoor use only, for protection against incidental contact and falling dirt. It gives no protection against rain, hose-down, dust ingress or corrosive vapor. For an outdoor or wet location you need a Type 3R, 4 or 4X enclosure instead. The painted carbon steel body also makes it a poor choice anywhere moisture collects.
2) What are the actual box dimensions of the B-Line 36248 HC junction box?
36 inches high, 24 inches wide, and 8 inches deep. That 8 inch depth is what decides most jobs: it gives room for wire bending space, terminal blocks or a small back panel, but it also means the box stands 8 inches off the wall once surface mounted, so check clearance in a corridor or equipment room walkway.
3) How do I hang a 36 x 24 x 8 B-Line HC enclosure on the wall, and what do I need to support it?
It is a surface mount enclosure with thru holes in the back for fastening straight to the wall or to Unistrut. Mounting hardware is not part of the box, so specify your own fasteners or strut. Plan the anchors around the weight: the box alone is 60.7 lb empty, before conductors, terminal blocks or a panel go in, so on stud framing hit the studs or use a strut span rather than drywall anchors.
4) Does the B-Line 36248 HC come with knockouts, or do I have to punch my own conduit entries?
Knockouts are already provided: 9 on the top, 9 on the bottom and 9 on the sides. That is enough factory entry for a multi-run pull box without bringing a hole saw or a Greenlee punch to the wall. If your conduit sizes or positions do not match the pattern, you can still punch the 16 gauge carbon steel body, but the stock knockout count covers most feeder-and-branch splice work.
5) Is this B-Line junction box UL listed, and is it made in the USA?
The 36248 HC is built to UL 50, the standard for enclosures for electrical equipment, and it is manufactured in the US. That UL 50 reference plus the Type 1 rating is what an inspector or a spec writer is looking for on an indoor pull and splice box submittal.
6) Will the B-Line HC enclosure match the grey gear already installed in our plant?
It is painted ANSI 61 grey, the standard industrial enclosure and switchgear color, so it lines up visually with most panelboards, disconnects and control enclosures already on the wall. For facilities standardizing a look across a building, that is the same finish family used on the rest of the B-Line steel enclosure line.
7) Is 16 gauge steel heavy enough for a junction box this size in a commercial building?
For an indoor Type 1 pull box at 36 by 24 by 8 inches, 16 gauge carbon steel is the normal body thickness and it holds shape under conduit loads on multiple faces. What it will not do is take abuse: in a loading dock, parking structure or anywhere cart and forklift traffic passes, mount it high or use a guard, because 16 gauge dents.
