B-LINE 863 SC – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can a B-Line 863 SC junction box be used outdoors or in a wet location?
No. The 863 SC is a NEMA Type 1 enclosure, which is indoor use only, and its screw cover has no gasket. It protects against incidental contact and falling dirt in dry indoor spaces such as mechanical rooms, back-of-house corridors and electrical closets. For washdown, damp or exposed locations you need a gasketed Type 3R, 4 or 12 box instead.
2) What are the actual box dimensions of the B-Line 863 SC?
The 863 SC measures 8 inches high, 6 inches wide and 3 inches deep, so the pull-box opening is 8 x 6 and you have 3 inches of wiring depth behind the cover. That depth is the number to check first if you are stacking terminal blocks or landing large conductors, and it matters on the wall side too if the box sits behind a panel trim or in a tight chase.
3) Does the 863 SC junction box come with knockouts already, or do I have to punch my own?
Knockouts are already provided: 4 on the sides, 3 on the top and 3 on the bottom. That gives you routing off both ends and both sides without taking a punch to a painted box, which is what you want when the box is feeding conduit in more than one direction.
4) How does the B-Line 863 SC mount to a wall?
It is a surface mount box with thru holes in the back pan, so it fastens flat to a wall, a plywood backboard or strut with your own fasteners. Mounting hardware is not part of the box, so pick anchors for the substrate you are on. At 3.3 pounds empty it is light enough for a single installer to hold and mark.
5) What gauge steel is the B-Line 863 SC box made from, and will it rust in a damp mechanical room?
The body is 16 gauge carbon steel with a painted finish in ANSI 61 grey. Painted carbon steel holds up in normal dry indoor conditions, but it is not stainless and the Type 1 construction is not sealed, so a humid or condensing space will eventually attack it. For those rooms specify a stainless or gasketed enclosure.
6) Is the cover on the 863 SC hinged, and how easy is it to get back on during install?
The cover is a screw-on plate, not hinged, secured with plated screws. B-Line puts keyhole slots in the cover so you can back the screws out part way and lift the cover off, then drop it back on without chasing every screw hole. Good for a box you open occasionally; if crews will be into it daily, a hinged-cover enclosure is the better call.
7) What part number do I order for this 8 x 6 x 3 B-Line screw cover box?
Order it as Eaton B-Line model 863 SC. The number follows the size: 8 high, 6 wide, 3 deep, with SC for screw cover. It is made in the US.
8) Will the 863 SC match the grey of the other enclosures already in my electrical room?
It is finished in ANSI 61 grey, the standard grey used across most industrial and commercial electrical enclosures and panelboards, so it will read as a match beside typical gear in a plant or building electrical room.
