B-LINE 866 SC NK – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Eaton B-Line 866 SC NK junction box be used outdoors or in a washdown area?
No. The 866 SC NK carries a NEMA Type 1 rating, which is indoor only, for general purpose protection against dust and incidental contact. It offers no protection against rain, hose-down, or corrosive washdown. For a wet or outdoor location you need a Type 3R or Type 4 enclosure instead.
2) Does the B-Line 866 SC NK junction box come with knockouts, or do I have to punch my own conduit holes?
It ships with no knockouts. The 866 SC NK is a blank carbon steel box, so you drill or punch the conduit entries you need in the field, exactly where your run comes in. That is the point of the NK version: full freedom on hole placement. If you would rather have factory openings sized for standard conduit, order a knockout version instead.
3) What are the inside dimensions and gauge of the B-Line 866 screw cover box?
The box measures 8 inches high, 6 inches wide and 6 inches deep, built from 16 gauge carbon steel and weighing 4.8 lb. The 6 inch depth is what matters most on a pull box: it gives room for conduit bushings, wire nuts and a bit of bending radius on larger conductors.
4) How does the cover come off on the B-Line 866 SC NK, and can one person do it alone?
The cover is a screw cover with plated screws and keyhole slots cut into it. The keyholes mean you can back the screws out part way and lift the cover off without removing them completely, so it will not drop out of your hand while you are on a ladder. It is not a hinged door, so for frequent access a hinged or latching enclosure is the better pick.
5) How does the 866 SC NK mount to a wall, and is mounting hardware included?
It is a surface mount box with thru holes in the back pan, so it bolts or screws flat to a wall, a plywood backboard, or Unistrut. Fasteners and anchors are not part of the box, so pick them for your substrate. Note that thru holes break the back of the box, which is fine for a Type 1 indoor enclosure.
6) Is this B-Line junction box UL listed, and will it match other enclosures in my plant?
The 866 SC NK is built to UL 50 and is finished in painted ANSI 61 grey, the standard industrial grey that lines up with most panel and gutter finishes already on a plant or mechanical room wall. It is made in the US.
7) Is a screw cover junction box like this the right choice, or should I use a hinged door enclosure?
A screw cover box like the 866 SC NK suits a pull point or splice box you open rarely, where the cover staying put matters more than quick access. Once terminal blocks, relays, or anything you service regularly go inside, a hinged single door enclosure is the better call because you are not handling a loose cover every visit. Both are Type 1 indoor enclosures.
