B-LINE 886 SC NK – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can a NEMA 1 junction box like the Eaton B-Line 886 SC NK be used outdoors or in a washdown area?
No. The 886 SC NK carries a NEMA Type 1 rating, which is indoor only, for protection against incidental contact and falling dirt. There is no gasket in a screw-cover Type 1 box, so rain, hose-down, dust-tight or damp exterior locations all need a higher rating (Type 3R, 4 or 12). Keep this one in dry, indoor electrical rooms, mechanical spaces and finished interiors.
2) Does the 886 SC NK come with knockouts, or do I have to drill my own conduit entries?
No knockouts. The 886 SC NK is the NK (no knockout) version, so every conduit entry gets field punched where you want it. That is the reason electricians choose it when the conduit layout is not fixed yet, but it does mean you need a hole punch set on site. If you want factory holes, order the knockout version of the same box instead.
3) What are the actual box dimensions of the B-Line 886 SC NK junction box?
It measures 8 inches height, 8 inches width and 6 inches length/depth, so it is a square 8 x 8 face with a 6 inch deep body. That depth matters for splice volume and for large conductor bending radius, and the 8 x 8 footprint is what you check against the wall or backing you are landing it on.
4) How does the B-Line 886 box mount to the wall, and are mounting holes provided?
It is a surface-mount enclosure with thru holes in the back for fastening straight to a wall, panel or backing board. Fasteners are not part of the box, so pick anchors to suit the substrate. The cover also has keyhole slots, which lets you back the cover screws out and lift the cover off without fully removing them, handy when you are working overhead.
5) What gauge steel is the B-Line 886 junction box, and will it hold up in a plant or maintenance corridor?
The body is 16 gauge carbon steel, painted ANSI 61 grey, and the whole box weighs 5.7 lb. Sixteen gauge is standard commercial-duty sheet for a box this size, stiff enough to take conduit runs and occasional knocks in a mechanical room or back-of-house corridor. Painted carbon steel is not for corrosive or wet duty, use stainless or a coated Type 4X enclosure there.
6) Screw cover versus hinged door junction box, which should I use?
This one is a screw cover: the lid comes off entirely and is held by plated screws, with keyhole slots so the screws stay captive in the cover. That suits splice points and pull boxes you open rarely and want secured. If the box is something you or a tech opens routinely for terminations, test points or a small control device, a hinged-door enclosure is the better pick since you are not managing loose screws on a ladder.
7) Will the grey finish on this B-Line box match the other enclosures already in my electrical room?
The 886 SC NK is painted ANSI 61 grey, which is the standard industrial enclosure grey used across most panelboards, disconnects and junction boxes. If your existing gear is the usual light grey electrical finish, it will read as a match on the wall.
