B-LINE 1286 RTHC NK – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the B-Line 1286 RTHC NK junction box be mounted outdoors?
Yes, within the limits of a NEMA 3R rating. The 1286 RTHC NK is a Type 3/3R enclosure with a rain hood over a formed top hinge, so it sheds falling rain, sleet and snow on an exterior wall. 3R does not cover hose-directed water or windblown dust, so for washdown areas or heavy dust you want a 4 or 12 rated box instead.
2) What are the actual box dimensions on the B-Line 1286 RTHC NK enclosure?
12 inches high, 8 inches wide and 6 inches deep. That 6 inch depth is what decides most jobs, it gives you room to land conduit fittings and make up splices behind the door rather than fighting the cover.
3) Does this B-Line enclosure come with knockouts, or do I drill my own conduit entries?
No knockouts. The 1286 RTHC NK is the NK (no knockout) version, so every conduit entry is field-punched where you want it. That is the usual choice for a 3R outdoor box, since you control which walls get penetrated and can keep entries out of the weather. If you want factory holes, order a knockout version of the same box instead.
4) How does the 1286 RTHC NK fasten to the wall, and are mounting holes provided?
It is a surface mount enclosure with embossed thru holes in the back pan, so it bolts flat to a wall, strut or backboard without drilling the box. Embossed holes keep the fastener heads off the mounting surface. Anchors and bolts are sized to your substrate and are not part of the box.
5) Can this outdoor junction box be locked?
Yes. The hinged cover has a padlock provision, so you add your own padlock to secure it. On a tenant-accessible exterior wall that is usually enough to keep the box closed to anyone without the key.
6) Is the cover hinged or fully removable on the B-Line 1286 RTHC NK?
Both. It is a small single door style with a formed top hinge, and the cover is removable. You can swing it open for normal work or lift it off entirely when you need clear access to pull wire or set a DIN rail or subpanel inside.
7) What gauge steel and finish is this B-Line enclosure, and will it hold up on an exterior wall?
16 gauge carbon steel, painted ANSI 61 grey. That is the standard industrial enclosure finish, so it matches the grey gear already on most plant and service walls. Painted carbon steel suits normal outdoor and industrial exposure; for coastal salt air or chemical exposure a stainless or non-metallic enclosure is the better call.
8) Is the B-Line 1286 RTHC NK UL listed for an inspected installation?
It carries UL 50, the standard for enclosures for electrical equipment, which is what an inspector looks for on a junction box body. Made in the US.
9) How much does the 1286 RTHC NK weigh for one-man installation?
7.7 pounds empty. One person can hold it in place and set the anchors, though on block or brick it is easier to drill and set anchors first, then hang the box on the embossed thru holes.
