B-LINE 444 RTSCGV – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the B-Line 444 RTSCGV junction box be mounted outdoors?
Yes, it is a NEMA Type 3R enclosure, so it is built for outdoor use where falling rain, sleet and external ice formation are the concern. The rainhood over the cover and the galvanized steel body are what make that rating work. It is not a washdown or hose-down box, so keep it off surfaces that get pressure washed or where water hits directly under pressure.
2) Does the B-Line 444 RTSCGV box come with knockouts, or do I have to punch my own?
There are 2 knockouts in the bottom of the box and nowhere else. That is deliberate on a 3R enclosure: conduit entries go in the bottom so water runs out rather than in. If your run comes in from the top or the back, you would be drilling the enclosure yourself and that compromises the 3R rating, so plan the raceway to enter from below.
3) What size is the 444 RTSCGV enclosure inside, and how heavy is it to hang?
It is a 4 x 4 x 4 inch cube of a box, 4 inches in height, width and length/depth, and it weighs 1.9 lb. At that weight one person hangs it on a wall or strut with no help and no backing beyond normal fasteners into a solid substrate.
4) How does the 444 RTSCGV mount to a wall, and are mounting holes already provided?
It is a surface mounted box with embossed thru holes already formed in the back, so you fasten it flat to the wall or backboard without drilling the enclosure. The embossed mounting provisions keep the fastener heads off the interior wiring space and maintain the weather integrity of the back panel. Fasteners suited to your substrate are not part of the box.
5) Is the cover on this B-Line 4x4x4 enclosure hinged or screw-on?
Screw cover, with plated screws. That suits a junction or pull point you rarely open. If the box is a device or control point that gets opened regularly for service, a hinged or latching 3R enclosure is the better call, because a screw cover means loose hardware in your hand every time you access it.
6) What gauge steel is the B-Line 444 RTSCGV, and will it hold up outdoors unpainted?
The body is 16 gauge galvanized steel and it ships unfinished in its natural grey galvanized state. The zinc coating is the corrosion protection, so no paint is required for normal outdoor exposure. If you want it to match a painted facade or a colored equipment scheme, it will need field finishing.
7) Can I use a NEMA 3R screw cover box like this one indoors as a standard pull box?
Yes. A 3R enclosure is rated for the tougher outdoor condition, so an indoor dry location is well within it. The single caution is the knockout arrangement: with only 2 bottom knockouts, an indoor run that wants to enter from the top or the sides will not have a factory entry to use. For interior work with entries on multiple faces, a standard indoor screw cover box with knockouts on all sides is the easier fit.
8) What exactly do I order to get this Eaton B-Line enclosure, and is there more than one size?
The part number is 444 RTSCGV, the RTSCGV series screw cover raintight box in the 4 x 4 x 4 inch size. The three 4s in the catalog number are the dimensions, so other sizes in the RTSCGV family follow the same pattern. Ordering the number as printed gets you the small single door style box with the rainhood and the galvanized finish.
