B-LINE 644 RTHC – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Eaton B-Line 644 RTHC junction box be mounted outdoors?
Yes. The 644 RTHC carries a NEMA 3R rating, which covers outdoor use against falling rain, sleet and ice formation. It also has a rain hood over the door. It is not a washdown or dust-tight box, so for hosedown or heavy dust go to a Type 4 or 4X enclosure instead.
2) How does the 644 RTHC enclosure mount, and does it need mounting feet?
Surface mount, straight to the wall or strut through embossed thru holes in the back of the box. The embossing keeps the fastener heads off the mounting surface so the back stays sealed. No external mounting feet are supplied with it.
3) Does the B-Line 644 RTHC junction box come with knockouts already, or do I have to punch my own?
It ships with 2 knockouts, so for a simple conduit in and out you are not drilling anything. Any additional entries you punch yourself, and on a 3R box those should be made on the bottom or lower sides and sealed with a raintight fitting so the rating holds.
4) What size is the B-Line 644 RTHC enclosure and how much does it weigh?
It measures 6 inches high, 4 inches wide and 4 inches deep, and weighs 2.2 pounds. That is a small single door box, sized for a disconnect splice, a contactor, or a few terminal blocks rather than a panel.
5) Can the cover on the 644 RTHC be locked?
Yes, there is a padlock provision on the door, so you can secure it with your own padlock. The cover is hinged on a formed top hinge and is removable, which helps when you need the box wide open to land conductors and then want the door back on.
6) Is the 644 RTHC steel or plastic, and will it hold up outdoors?
Carbon steel, 16 gauge, painted ANSI 61 grey. That is the standard grey you see on most industrial gear, so it matches adjacent enclosures on a wall. Steel does mean you need to keep the paint intact at field-drilled holes; in salt air or chemical exposure a stainless or non-metallic 4X enclosure is the better call.
