B-LINE 664 RTHC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the B-Line 664 RTHC junction box be mounted outdoors?
Yes. The 664 RTHC carries a NEMA 3R rating, so it is built for outdoor use against falling rain and sleet, and it includes a rain hood over the cover. It is UL 50 listed. Note that 3R is rain-tight, not dust-tight or washdown rated, so keep it off of hose-down or heavy dust locations.
2) What are the box dimensions on the B-Line 664 RTHC enclosure?
It measures 6 inches high, 6 inches wide and 4 inches deep. That 4 inch depth is what usually decides the job: it gives room for a small terminal block, a contactor, or a wire splice with a bit of bend radius, but it is tight for anything with a deep body. Shipping weight is 2.7 lb.
3) How does the 664 RTHC enclosure mount to a wall?
It is a surface mount box with embossed thru holes in the back panel area, so it fastens flat to a wall, post or strut with your own screws or bolts. Mounting hardware is not part of the enclosure, so pick fasteners to suit the substrate. It is not designed to be recessed into a wall.
4) Is a NEMA 3R box like this good enough for a dusty or wet-location install?
For an outdoor wall, a pole, a rooftop curb or an unheated exterior area, 3R is the right and usual choice and the 664 RTHC covers it with its rain hood. If your location involves hose-down cleaning, windblown dust, or oil and coolant, 3R will not do it and you want a 4 or 4X gasketed enclosure instead. Indoors in a clean dry room, 3R is more box than you need and a Type 1 would be cheaper to install.
5) Does the 664 RTHC box come with knockouts already punched, or do I have to drill it?
Three knockouts are provided in the 664 RTHC. If you need conduit entries elsewhere, plan on punching the carbon steel body yourself. Standard practice on a 3R enclosure is to keep added entries on the bottom or lower sides so water does not track in.
6) How does the cover open on this B-Line RTHC box, and can it be locked?
The cover is hinged on a formed top hinge and it is removable, so you can swing it open for service or take it off entirely during rough-in and wire pulling. There is a padlock provision on the cover for securing it in a public or shared area.
7) What is the B-Line 664 RTHC made of and will it hold up outdoors?
Body and cover are 16 gauge carbon steel with a painted finish in ANSI 61 grey. 16 gauge is a rigid wall that will not oil-can when you tighten a conduit fitting. Because it is painted steel rather than stainless, keep the paint intact and touch up any field-drilled edges, especially in coastal or chemical environments where stainless would be the better call.
8) Will the 664 RTHC match the grey of the other enclosures already on my site?
It is finished in ANSI 61 grey, the standard industrial enclosure grey used across most switchgear and control cabinet lines, so it will read as a match alongside typical panel and disconnect enclosures. For facilities standardizing a look across many openings, that is the color to spec.
