B-LINE 4436 G NK – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the B-Line 4436 G NK wireway be used outdoors or in a washdown area?
It's built to NEMA 4X, so it's rated for wet locations, hosedown, and corrosion exposure rather than dry indoor use only. The cover seals down with plated screws all around instead of a hinge or latch, which is what keeps the 4X integrity. It's also CSA Certified. Bear in mind a 4X assembly is only as good as its connectors and end plates, so every opening you cut or couple into has to be closed with 4X-rated fittings.
2) What size is the B-Line 4436 wireway trough, and how much conduit fill does 4 x 4 give me?
The trough is 4 inches high by 4 inches wide, in a 36 inch length. That's a 16 square inch cross section, and wireway is conventionally filled to 20 percent of that area, so about 3.2 square inches of conductor is the working figure for sizing. If you need more room than that, step up to a 6 x 6 or 8 x 8 trough rather than paralleling two 4 x 4 runs.
3) Does the 4436 G NK wireway come with knockouts already punched?
No. The NK in the model designation means no knockouts, so the sides and ends come solid. You drill or punch exactly where your conduit lands, which is usually what you want on a NEMA 4X run since every unused knockout is a seal you have to close. If you would rather have factory openings, order the knockout version of the same trough instead.
4) How does this B-Line wireway mount, and does it come with hardware?
Mounting is by thru holes in the back of the trough, so it fastens flat to a wall, strut, or backplate with your own bolts or lags sized to the substrate. No anchors or mounting hardware are supplied. At 9.936 lb for the 36 inch section it is light enough for two fasteners per section into solid backing, though on strut most electricians land every section on its own pair of channel nuts.
5) Is a screw cover wireway the right choice, or should I use a hinged cover instead?
Screw cover is the choice when the enclosure has to hold a wet or corrosive rating and you are not going back into it often. The 4436 G NK secures its cover with plated screws, which is what supports the NEMA 4X rating but also means every screw comes out by hand when you pull additional circuits. If the trough sits above a panel you revisit constantly and the location is dry, a hinged cover trough saves labour. For outdoor, washdown, or chemical areas, stay with the screw cover.
6) Will a 36 inch wireway section let me build a longer run, and what else do I need to order?
Yes, wireway is built up from sections, and the 36 inch length is the common building block for wall runs. The 4436 G NK ships as a trough and cover only. To finish a run in 4 x 4 you also need connectors or couplings between sections, end plates or closing plates at each termination, and any elbows, tees, or hanger brackets the layout calls for, all in matching 4 x 4 size and in a 4X-rated style if you are holding that rating. Fittings are ordered separately from the trough.
7) What gauge steel is the B-Line 4436 G NK wireway, and what color does it come in?
16 gauge steel, finished in ANSI 61 gray. That is the standard gray used on switchgear and panelboards, so a run of this trough matches the equipment it feeds without field painting. The 16 gauge body is what lets a 4 inch trough span between supports without oilcanning under cover screw torque.
8) Can I standardize my facility on the 4436 G NK for both indoor and outdoor runs?
You can. A NEMA 4X, CSA Certified trough is acceptable in dry indoor areas as well, so one part number covers mechanical rooms, exterior walls, and washdown spaces. The tradeoff is labour: indoor-only runs could use a cheaper hinged or unrated trough, and the screw cover here takes longer to open. The ANSI 61 gray finish keeps everything looking consistent across the site.
