1) Is this B-Line elbow rated for a NEMA 12 wireway system?
It is. The 44-12LE9A is a NEMA 12 fitting and ships with one sealing plate kit, which is what gets you the dust-tight and drip-tight joint at the connection. Leave the sealing plate out and you no longer have a NEMA 12 enclosure at that corner. It is also UL Listed.
2) Can I use a NEMA 12 wireway elbow like this outdoors?
No. NEMA 12 is an indoor, dust-tight and drip-tight rating, not a wet or rain-tight one. The 44-12LE9A belongs in plant floors, mechanical rooms and similar indoor industrial spaces. For outdoor or washdown work you need a NEMA 3R or 4/4X wireway fitting instead.
3) What does "top opening" mean on this 90 degree wireway elbow, and which way does it turn?
Top opening means the removable cover is on the top face, so conductors lay in from above rather than being pulled through. The 44-12LE9A makes a 90 degree turn in the horizontal plane of that top-opening run, which is how you carry a lay-in trough around a corner along a wall or ceiling and still be able to drop the cover off and set the wire in by hand.
4) Do I need to buy a gasket or sealing kit separately for this wireway elbow?
No. One sealing plate kit comes with the elbow. You will still need connectors or hardware appropriate to the trough sections you are joining it to, but the sealing plate itself is in the box.
5) Is this wireway elbow painted, and will it match the rest of my B-Line trough?
The body is steel with an ANSI 61 gray painted finish, which is the standard gray used across Eaton B-Line wireway, so it matches adjacent painted trough sections and fittings in the same run.
