1) Is the 8836-12LW wireway rated for a washdown or dusty area?
It's a NEMA 12 enclosure, so it's built for indoor use against falling dirt, dust, and dripping non-corrosive liquids. That covers most plant floors, mechanical rooms, and food-adjacent packaging areas. It is not a NEMA 4 or 4X rating, so don't put it where it will be hosed down directly or where it sees weather or corrosive chemicals.

Lay-in means the cover comes off the length of the trough so you drop conductors straight down into it instead of pulling them through. For a panel board feeding a lot of branch circuits, or any install where you expect to add or re-pull circuits later, that saves a great deal of labor over pulling through conduit. Conduit is still the answer for concealed runs, long single home runs, and anywhere the raceway needs a tighter environmental rating than NEMA 12.
5) Will this wireway match the gray equipment already in my plant?
The section is painted ANSI 61 gray, which is the same standard gray used on most industrial control panels, switchgear, and enclosures. If your existing wireway and panels are ANSI 61, this matches without repainting.
6) Is this wireway steel or aluminum, and can I use it outdoors?
Painted steel, not aluminum or stainless. Combined with the NEMA 12 rating, that makes it an indoor product. For outdoor, wet, or corrosive locations you want a NEMA 3R or 4X wireway instead, typically in stainless or a coated construction.
