Eaton BRMIKBRUL – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Eaton BRMIKBRUL interlock kit fit a Square D or Siemens panel?
No. The BRMIKBRUL is built for Eaton BR series loadcenters only. The interlock slides on the deadfront and has to line up with the breaker positions and cover geometry of a BR panel, so a Square D Homeline/QO or Siemens panel needs that manufacturer's own interlock kit. Check the panel label for the BR series marking before ordering.
2) What does a generator interlock kit actually do on a breaker panel?
It is a mechanical slide that makes it physically impossible to have the main breaker and the generator backfeed breaker on at the same time. To close the generator breaker you must first turn the main off, which isolates the house from the utility. That prevents backfeeding the utility line, which is the hazard that kills linemen and damages the generator when utility power returns. The BRMIKBRUL provides that positive mechanical isolation on Eaton BR panels.
3) Is the Eaton BR mechanical interlock kit UL Listed for inspection sign-off?
Yes, the BRMIKBRUL is UL Listed. That matters because a field-fabricated or generic interlock plate is a common inspection failure on generator interconnections; an inspector is looking for a listed interlock supplied by the panel manufacturer for that panel line. This one is Eaton's own kit for Eaton BR loadcenters.
4) Do I still need a backfeed breaker with the BRMIKBRUL interlock kit?
Yes. The BRMIKBRUL is the interlock hardware only, it does not include a breaker. You supply a BR series double pole breaker sized to the generator output for the backfeed position, plus the inlet, cable and conduit for the generator connection. The kit is what makes that backfeed breaker code compliant by preventing it from being closed while the main is on.
5) Can I use an interlock kit instead of a transfer switch for a standby generator?
For manual transfer, yes, and that is what the BRMIKBRUL is for. An interlock lets you keep the existing BR loadcenter and pick any circuits in the panel, rather than being limited to the handful of circuits a small transfer switch panel carries. The tradeoff is that the changeover is manual: you kill the main, slide the interlock, close the generator breaker, then start the generator. If you need unattended automatic changeover for an always-on load, an automatic transfer switch is the right product instead.
6) Is a generator interlock kit acceptable for a commercial building or only a house?
Eaton lists the BRMIKBRUL for residential and light commercial use, and typical applications include multi-unit properties, professional offices, retail, light industrial and emergency services buildings. The limiting factor is the panel: it has to be an Eaton BR loadcenter. Larger commercial gear on other Eaton lines, such as CH or a switchboard, takes different interlock hardware.
7) Does the BRMIKBRUL interlock work on a main lug panel?
No. An interlock works by blocking the main breaker handle against the generator breaker handle, so the loadcenter has to have a main breaker in it. A main lug BR panel fed from upstream has no main handle to interlock against, so you would need a main breaker panel, a subfeed arrangement, or a transfer switch ahead of the panel instead.
8) Who is allowed to install an Eaton BR interlock kit?
This is qualified electrician work. Fitting the BRMIKBRUL means pulling the deadfront on an energized service panel, adding a backfeed breaker and landing generator feeder conductors, and the install has to satisfy NEC rules for generator interconnection in your jurisdiction. Most inspectors want the interlock, the inlet and the backfeed breaker permitted and inspected together.
