Bussmann RES-50 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Bussmann RES-50 fit a standard 600V 50A fuse block or disconnect?
The RES-50 is a Class H ferrule-end fuse rated 600V, 50A, measuring 0.78 x 0.78 x 5.5 inches. Class H dimensions at 600V in the 35-60A band are standardized, so it drops into any 600V Class H fuse clip or disconnect sized for 50A. Both ends are ferrule type, so there are no bolt-on blade terminals to accommodate.
2) What does renewable mean on the RES-50 fuse, and can I reuse the body after it blows?
Renewable means the fuse body is designed to be opened and fitted with a replacement link rather than discarded. The RES-50 is a renewable Class H fuse, so after an operation the barrel and ferrules stay in service and only the fusible element is replaced. Plants that stock renewable links keep the holder cost down, but you need the matching 50A link on the shelf for the swap to be useful.
3) Is a 10 kAIC Class H fuse enough for my service, or do I need a current-limiting fuse?
The RES-50 interrupts 10 kAIC at 250 Vac and is non current-limiting. If your available fault current at the point of installation exceeds that, or the downstream equipment is series-rated or marked for a current-limiting Class (RK1, RK5, J), this fuse is the wrong choice. Class H at 10 kAIC suits older industrial and commercial panels with low available fault current.
4) Will a Super Lag time-delay fuse hold through motor inrush at 50 amps?
Super Lag, Time Lag construction means the element tolerates the brief overcurrent of a motor start or transformer energization without opening, while still clearing a sustained fault. That is why the RES-50 is used on motor and similar inductive loads at 50A. A fast-acting fuse of the same rating would nuisance-open on the same inrush.
5) Can I tell at a glance whether this Bussmann fuse has opened?
No. The RES-50 is non indicating, so there is no pop-out pin or window to show an operated element. Troubleshooting means pulling the fuse and testing continuity, or metering across it with the circuit live and properly guarded. If your maintenance crew wants visual status, you need an indicating-type fuse instead.
6) Can the RES-50 be used on a 240V or 480V circuit, or only 600V?
The 600V rating is a maximum, so the RES-50 can be applied on 600V and lower systems, including 480V and 240V. Note the interrupting rating is published as 10 kAIC at 250 Vac, so size your application against the available fault current at the voltage you are actually running.
7) How many Bussmann RES-50 fuses come in a carton?
RES-50 fuses ship in standard packaging, 10 per carton. For a three-phase disconnect that is enough to fuse three gear positions with spares on the shelf, which is how most MRO stockrooms buy them.
