Eaton CHPX1AF – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Eaton CHPX a complete loadcenter or just the cover?
What ships here is the cover for an Eaton CH loadcenter, not a loaded panel. It is the flush-mount trim/door assembly in sandalwood that closes out a CH main breaker or main lug loadcenter running 120/240V. If you need the interior, bus and breakers, that is a separate purchase. Order the cover to match the enclosure you already have in the wall.
2) How do I pick the right CHPX cover for my Eaton CH panel?
Match it to the panel's space count and main type, because that is what sizes the opening. The range runs CHPX0AF for a 12 space / 24 pole 125A main lug, CHPX1AF at 14/28 100A main breaker, CHPX2AF at 22/44, CHPX5AF at 30/60, CHPX5BF at 24/48 150A main breaker, CHPX5LF at 24/48 225A main lug, CHPX6BF at 24/48 200A main breaker, CHPX6LF at 42/84 225A main lug, CHPX7BF at 42/84 225A main breaker, and CHPX9BF at 60/120 225A main breaker. Count the spaces in your existing loadcenter and note whether it is main lug or main breaker, then order the matching part number.
3) Will the CHPX cover work on a surface-mounted panel?
No. The CHPX cover is built for flush mounting, meaning the enclosure is recessed in the wall and the trim laps onto the finished surface. On a surface-mounted CH loadcenter the box sits proud of the wall and needs a surface cover instead. Check how your can is set before ordering, because a flush trim on a surface box leaves the enclosure edges exposed.
4) Does this cover fit Eaton BR loadcenters, or only CH?
CH only. The trim is cut for CH-series loadcenters using 3/4 inch plug-on-neutral spaces and CH breakers, and BR panels use a different breaker footprint and a different can. If your existing panel takes BR breakers, this cover will not line up with the deadfront openings.
5) Is this cover for an indoor panel or can it go outside?
Indoor. The NEMA 1 rating covers general indoor use, protecting against incidental contact with live parts and falling dirt. It is not rated for rain, washdown or damp exterior walls, so an outdoor service location needs a rainproof enclosure and cover instead.
6) I have a 200A main breaker CH panel with 24 spaces. Which Eaton cover do I order?
CHPX6BF is the match: 200A, main breaker connection, 24 spaces and 48 poles. Note there are three other covers at that same 24 space / 48 pole count, so amperage and connection type are what separate them: CHPX5BF at 150A main breaker, CHPX5LF at 225A main lug, and CHPX6BF at 200A main breaker.
7) What does main lug versus main breaker mean when choosing a CH panel cover?
It changes the shape of the cover. A main breaker panel has a main device at the top, so the trim carries an extra opening for that handle. A main lug panel feeds straight to the bus with no main, so the trim has no main breaker cutout. Among these covers CHPX0AF, CHPX5LF and CHPX6LF are the main lug versions; the rest are cut for main breaker panels. Ordering the wrong one leaves either a blank spot or no way to reach the main.
8) What width opening do I need for an Eaton CH flush loadcenter cover?
The cover measures 15.31 inches in width. That is the trim dimension, so the rough opening and the recessed CH can behind it need to sit within that footprint for the trim to cover the drywall cut cleanly. Depth of the trim itself is about 1 inch.
9) What is the largest Eaton CH flush cover available for a big multi-family or commercial panel?
CHPX9BF is the top of the range, covering a 60 space, 120 pole loadcenter at 225A with a main breaker. Below it, CHPX6LF and CHPX7BF both handle 42 spaces and 84 poles at 225A, the difference being main lug versus main breaker. Those three are the ones to look at for a large distribution panel in a multi-unit building or commercial suite.
10) Is the Eaton CH loadcenter cover rated for 120/240V single phase service?
Voltage rating on the CH loadcenter is 120/240V, which is standard residential and light commercial single phase service. The bus in the CH loadcenter is aluminum, and the base interrupt rating is 10 kAIC, with several of the main breaker versions (CHPX5BF, CHPX6BF, CHPX7BF and CHPX9BF) carrying a 25 kAIC main.
11) Will the cover match the other Eaton panels already in my building?
Finish is sandalwood across the CHPX covers, which is Eaton's standard loadcenter trim color, so a replacement trim will read the same as the CH panels already installed in the rest of the property. What still has to match is the space count and whether the panel is main lug or main breaker, since those set the cutouts.
12) Do CH breakers take up half a space like tandem breakers in other panels?
The CH loadcenter is laid out on 3/4 inch plug-on-neutral spaces, and the pole counts run at double the space counts across the range, for example 42 spaces to 84 poles on CHPX6LF and 60 spaces to 120 poles on CHPX9BF. That doubling is why space count and pole count both appear on the part selection: count physical spaces in your can, not breaker handles, when picking the cover.
