Eaton CHFN120GF – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What's the difference between the CHFN and CHFP Eaton CH breakers, and which one fits my panel?
It comes down to how the neutral connects. The CHFN breakers (like CHFN120DF) use a pigtail neutral, a white wire you land on the panel's neutral bar, so they work in older CH loadcenters that have no neutral bus on the mounting rail. The CHFP breakers (CHFP120DF and the rest of the P group) are plug-on neutral, picking the neutral up through the stab when you snap them in, which only works in a CH panel built with a plug-on neutral bar. Look at your panel first: if there's no neutral rail behind the breakers, order the CHFN pigtail version.
2) Will an Eaton CH breaker fit a Square D, Siemens, or Eaton BR panel?
No. These are CH-type breakers and they only mount in Eaton CH loadcenters. CH and BR are both Eaton but they are different bus and mounting systems, so a CH breaker will not seat correctly in a BR panel, and neither Square D QO/Homeline nor Siemens accepts it. Check the label inside your panel door for the accepted breaker type before ordering.
3) Do I need AFCI, GFCI, or dual function on this circuit?
Four protection types are offered on the Eaton CH single-pole line and they solve different problems. AFCI Combo (CHFN115AF, CHFP120AF) catches arcing faults, which is what bedrooms, living rooms, and most 15A and 20A dwelling-unit branch circuits call for. GFCI Only (CHFN115GF, CHFP120GF) is the Class A people-protection device for bathrooms, kitchens, garages, outdoors, and wet areas. Dual Function AF/GF (CHFN120DF, CHFP115DF) does both in one slot, which is what kitchens and laundry rooms usually need now. Equipment Protection GFCI (CHFN115EP, CHFN120EP) trips at the 30mA equipment level, not the 5mA personnel level, so use it for heat trace and similar equipment, never as a substitute for a personnel GFCI.
4) Can I use a 20A Eaton CH AFCI breaker on 14 gauge wire?
No. The breaker protects the wire, so a 20A device such as CHFN120AF or CHFP120AF requires 12 AWG copper minimum. For an existing 14 AWG circuit, use the 15A version (CHFN115AF or CHFP115AF). Both amperages are offered in every protection type, so you can match the amperage to the conductor already in the wall rather than to the old breaker's label.
5) Does a GFCI or AFCI breaker need its own neutral run back to the panel?
Yes, and this is where these installs go wrong. Both the pigtail and plug-on neutral versions require the branch circuit neutral to land on the breaker itself, not on the panel's neutral bar. On the CHFN pigtail models the breaker's own white pigtail is what goes to the neutral bar. Shared or multiwire neutrals will nuisance trip the device, so each protected circuit needs a dedicated neutral back to the breaker.
6) How much panel space does an Eaton CH AFCI or GFCI breaker take up?
Three quarters of an inch per pole, the same footprint as a standard CH single-pole breaker. That matters on a retrofit: swapping a plain single-pole for an AFCI or GFCI version in a CH panel does not cost you a slot, unlike some competing brands where the protective breaker is wider. If you are converting a full panel of standard breakers to AFCI, the slot count stays the same.
7) What is the CHFP115A1CS all-in-one AFCI/GFCI compared to the dual-function CHFP115DF?
Both are plug-on neutral single-pole 15A devices that combine arc fault and ground fault protection. The A1CS models, CHFP115A1CS and CHFP120A1CS in 20A, are Eaton's all-in-one AFCI/GFCI build; the DF models are catalogued as dual-function AF/GF. Note that the all-in-one A1CS versions are only offered plug-on neutral, so if your CH panel has no plug-on neutral bar you are choosing between the CHFN115DF or CHFN120DF pigtail dual-function breakers instead.
8) Are Eaton CH AFCI and GFCI breakers UL Listed for a commercial inspection?
UL Listed, yes. The Eaton CH single-pole AFCI, GFCI, and dual-function breakers carry UL Listing at 120/240V with the 10 kAIC interrupting rating, which is what an inspector wants to see on the breaker label against the panel's listed breaker schedule.
9) I manage several buildings with Eaton CH panels. Which of these should I standardize on?
For a mixed portfolio, the dual-function AF/GF breakers cover the widest range of circuits with one part, since they handle both arc fault and ground fault duty. Stock them in both amperages and both neutral styles: CHFN115DF and CHFN120DF for older CH panels without a plug-on neutral bar, CHFP115DF and CHFP120DF for the panels that have one. That is four part numbers covering nearly every 120V branch circuit replacement across a fleet of CH loadcenters.
10) Can I put a single-pole CH breaker on a 240V circuit?
Not on its own. These are single-pole devices rated 120/240V, meaning one hot leg to neutral at 120V. A 240V load such as a water heater, dryer, or condenser needs a two-pole breaker occupying two slots. The 120/240V marking on a single-pole breaker refers to its rating within a 120/240V system, not to its ability to feed a 240V load.
