1) Will an Eaton BR AFCI breaker fit my existing panel?
The BR Series AFCI breaker is built for Eaton Type BR loadcenters and plugs onto the bus in that panel. It will not seat correctly in a Cutler-Hammer CH panel or another manufacturer's loadcenter, since the plug-on footprint is BR specific. Check the label inside your panel door: if it says Type BR, this is the right breaker. If it says CH, you need a CH series AFCI instead.
2) What is the difference between the pigtail and plug-on neutral versions of the Eaton BR AFCI?
Two wiring styles, same protection. The pigtail versions (BRN115AF at 15A, BRN120AF at 20A) carry a white neutral wire you land on the panel neutral bar, and they work in any Type BR loadcenter. The plug-on neutral versions (BRP115AF at 15A, BRP120AF at 20A) pick the neutral up off a neutral bus bar built into the panel, so there is no pigtail to route, but the loadcenter has to be a BR panel equipped for plug-on neutral. If you are replacing a breaker in an older BR panel, order the pigtail.
3) Should I put a 15A or a 20A AFCI breaker on this circuit?
Match the breaker to the wire already in the wall, not to the load. The Eaton BR AFCI comes in 15A (BRN115AF, BRP115AF) and 20A (BRN120AF, BRP120AF). A circuit run in #14 conductor takes the 15A; #12 conductor takes the 20A. Going up to a 20A breaker on #14 wire is the classic mistake and it defeats the overcurrent protection.
4) Can I use this Eaton AFCI breaker on a 240V circuit like a dryer or water heater?
No. It is a single-pole breaker rated 120V, so it protects one hot leg on a standard branch circuit. A 240V appliance circuit needs a two-pole breaker. Use this one for the 120V lighting and receptacle circuits where arc fault protection is required.
5) Does the Eaton BR AFCI breaker also give me GFCI protection for a kitchen or bath circuit?
No. This is an arc fault breaker only, not a dual function AFCI/GFCI. Circuits that require ground fault protection for personnel, kitchen counter receptacles, bathrooms, laundry, garages and outdoors, need a GFCI or dual function device instead. Bedroom, living area and general lighting circuits that only call for arc fault protection are what this breaker is for.
6) What do I need to land besides the hot wire when installing an Eaton BR AFCI?
An arc fault breaker needs the circuit neutral routed through it, not to the panel neutral bar. On the pigtail versions the circuit neutral lands on the breaker's neutral terminal and the breaker's white pigtail goes to the neutral bar. On the plug-on neutral versions the circuit neutral lands on the breaker and the breaker picks up panel neutral from the bus itself. Getting the neutral wrong is the usual cause of an AFCI that trips the moment you close it.
7) What wire sizes will the Eaton BR AFCI breaker lug accept?
The load lug takes #14 through #8 AWG, copper or aluminum. That covers standard #14 and #12 branch circuit conductors on 15A and 20A lighting and receptacle circuits, and leaves room if a larger conductor was pulled for a long run and voltage drop.
8) Is the Eaton BR AFCI breaker UL Listed for a code inspection?
UL Listed, and that listing is what an inspector looks for on an arc fault device. For a panel of units being brought up to current arc fault requirements, the BR AFCI is a straight single-pole swap in a Type BR loadcenter, so standardizing a building on one part number is workable.
