1) Will an Eaton QB1020CAF AFCI breaker fit a plug-on load center, or does it need a bolt-on panel?
Bolt-on only. The QB1020CAF fastens to the bus with a screw, so it needs a panel with bolt-on bus provisions, typically an Eaton QB/Pow-R-Line style interior. It will not snap onto a plug-on stab bus in a residential load center. If the panel you are working in takes plug-on breakers, this is the wrong mounting style and you need a plug-on AFCI instead.
2) Does an AFCI breaker also give me ground fault protection, or do I still need a GFCI?
Arc fault only. The QB1020CAF is an AFCI, it detects the arcing signature that starts fires in damaged or loose wiring, and it still provides normal overcurrent and short circuit protection. It does not provide the 5 milliamp personnel ground fault protection a GFCI gives. Where the circuit needs both, kitchens, baths, laundry, outdoor and garage receptacles in dwellings, use a dual function AFCI/GFCI breaker or put a GFCI receptacle downstream.
3) How much panel space does the Eaton QB1020CAF take up?
One pole of width. The breaker measures 1 inch by 3.5 inches by 6 inches, so it occupies a single full size space in the panel. That 1 inch width is the figure that matters when you are counting remaining spaces, and the 6 inch depth dimension is worth checking against a shallow or flush mounted enclosure with tight gutter space behind the cover.
4) My AFCI keeps tripping on an older circuit. Is that the breaker or the wiring?
Usually the wiring. An AFCI like the QB1020CAF watches for the current signature of a series or parallel arc, so shared neutrals between circuits, a nicked conductor under a staple, loose backstab terminations at receptacles, and some brush motor or dimmer loads all show up as nuisance trips. On a retrofit, the common culprit is a multiwire branch circuit with the neutrals tied together, since each AFCI needs its own dedicated neutral landed on the breaker pigtail. Separate the neutrals and check terminations before replacing the breaker.
