Eaton CLCAF120 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What amperages does the Eaton CLCAF AFCI breaker come in?
Two ratings: 15A (CLCAF115) and 20A (CLCAF120). Both are single-pole, 10 kAIC, and both are combination AFCI, so a 15A bedroom lighting circuit and a 20A kitchen or laundry receptacle circuit can be covered from the same family.
2) Is the Eaton CLCAF a combination-type AFCI or just a branch/feeder AFCI?
It is a combination AFCI, meaning it detects both parallel arcing (line to neutral or line to ground) and series arcing along a broken conductor. Branch/feeder-only devices catch parallel faults alone. For jurisdictions and inspectors calling for combination-type AFCI protection on dwelling branch circuits, this is the type being asked for.
3) Do I have to run a separate neutral pigtail when I install an AFCI breaker?
Yes. An AFCI breaker monitors the circuit neutral, so the branch circuit neutral lands on the breaker itself and the breaker's white pigtail goes to the panel neutral bar. That is the step that trips people up on a straight swap from a standard single-pole: the circuit neutral has to be pulled off the neutral bus and moved onto the breaker. Shared (multi-wire) circuits have to be separated first, since each single-pole AFCI needs its own dedicated neutral.
4) Does this Eaton AFCI breaker also give GFCI protection for bathroom and kitchen receptacles?
No. The CLCAF is a combination arc fault device only. It does not provide the 5 mA ground fault protection for personnel that a GFCI or dual-function breaker gives. Where the code calls for GFCI at a bathroom, kitchen counter, garage, or outdoor receptacle, you need a GFCI breaker or GFCI receptacle in addition, or a dual-function AFCI/GFCI breaker instead.
5) What is the difference between the CLCAF115 and the CLCAF120, and which should I order?
Only the amp rating. CLCAF115 is 15A, CLCAF120 is 20A. Match the breaker to the wire already in the circuit, not to what you would like the circuit to carry: 14 AWG copper takes the 15A, 12 AWG copper takes the 20A. Putting the 20A on a 14 AWG home run overloads the conductor.
6) Can I use one of these on a 240V circuit like a water heater?
No. The CLCAF is a single-pole device, so it lands on one bus leg and serves 120V branch circuits. A 240V load needs a two-pole breaker. Keep this one for the 15A and 20A lighting, bedroom, and receptacle circuits that need arc fault protection.
7) Is this Eaton AFCI breaker suitable for apartment buildings and small commercial panels, or is it residential only?
Both. The 10 kAIC single-pole combination AFCI is used for residential branch circuits and also in multi-unit properties, offices, retail, light industrial, and school buildings where 120V branch circuits need arc fault protection and the available fault current is within 10 kAIC. For a property manager standardizing across units, ordering all 15A and 20A single-poles from the same CLCAF family keeps the spares stock down to two part numbers.
