Eaton BRP120GF – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will an Eaton BRP GFCI breaker plug into my existing panel?
The BRP GFCI is a plug-on breaker, so it seats on the bus of panels that take Eaton BR-style plug-on breakers. It takes one 1-inch space in the panel. If your panel uses bolt-on breakers or another manufacturer's bus, a BRP will not seat in it. Check that the panel's label calls out BR breakers before you order a stack of them for a building.
2) Should I use a GFCI breaker at the panel or a GFCI receptacle at the outlet?
A BRP GFCI breaker protects the entire branch circuit from the panel forward, including the wiring in the wall and every device downstream. A GFCI receptacle only protects from that device on. For a property manager with tenants who keep nuisance-tripping a device they cannot find, or an outdoor or crawlspace circuit where the receptacle is hard to reach, the breaker is the better location because the reset is at the panel where maintenance already has access. Where you only need one specific outlet covered and the panel is full, the receptacle is the cheaper slot-free option.
3) What is the difference between the BRP115GF and the BRP120GF?
Amperage only. The BRP115GF is the 15A version and the BRP120GF is the 20A. Both are single-pole, 120V, 5 mA GFCI, plug-on, 10 kAIC. Match the breaker to the conductor already in the circuit: do not put a BRP120GF on a circuit wired in 14 AWG.
4) Is 10 kAIC enough interrupting rating for my service?
The BRP GFCI is rated 10 kAIC. That covers the available fault current at most residential and light commercial services fed from a typical utility transformer. On a larger commercial service, near a big transformer, or anywhere the engineer's drawing calls out a higher series or specific AIC, 10 kAIC may fall short and you need a higher-rated breaker. If there is a fault current study on the job, read the number off it before you order.
5) Does this Eaton GFCI breaker need a neutral connection, or is it a plug-on neutral type?
It is a plug-on neutral design: the breaker picks up its neutral from the panel's neutral bar rail rather than through a separate pigtail landed on the neutral bus. The load neutral for the circuit still lands on the breaker itself, because that is how a GFCI senses the imbalance between hot and neutral. Your panel has to have the plug-on neutral rail for this to work.
6) What trip level does the Eaton BRP GFCI breaker use, and will it protect people or just equipment?
5 mA sensitivity, which is people protection, the class used for bathrooms, kitchens, garages, outdoor receptacles and wet locations. It is not the 30 mA equipment-protection level used for things like heat trace, so do not substitute one for the other when a drawing calls out equipment ground fault protection.
7) Can I use a BRP GFCI breaker on a 240V circuit or a two-wire 240V load?
No. It is a single-pole breaker for 120V branch circuits. A 240V load needs a two-pole GFCI breaker, which is a different part. The single-pole BRP GFCI covers 120V circuits like receptacles, lighting and small appliance branch circuits.
8) I have a multiwire branch circuit sharing a neutral. Can I put a GFCI breaker on it?
Not on a shared neutral as wired. A GFCI breaker compares the current on its own hot against the neutral landed on it, so if that neutral carries return current from a second circuit the breaker sees an imbalance and trips immediately. To put GFCI protection on a multiwire branch circuit you have to separate the neutrals, giving each hot its own dedicated neutral back to the panel, or use a two-pole GFCI breaker that handles both legs and the shared neutral together.
9) How much panel space does a single-pole Eaton BRP GFCI breaker take up?
One full 1-inch space per breaker. That matters when you are adding GFCI protection to a panel that is already tight: unlike a standard tandem, a GFCI breaker cannot be doubled up, so each circuit you convert costs you a full slot. Count your open spaces before committing to how many circuits you are converting.
10) What wire size can I land on an Eaton BRP GFCI breaker?
The lug takes #14 through #8 AWG. That covers 14 AWG for a 15A circuit and 12 AWG for a 20A circuit, which is what these breakers are sized for, and leaves room for an upsized conductor on a long run where you are compensating for voltage drop.
11) How do I tell whether an Eaton BRP GFCI breaker tripped on a ground fault or an overload?
The handle is trip-to-center, so a tripped breaker sits between ON and OFF rather than snapping fully to OFF, and there is a GFI indicator on the face. To reset, push the handle firmly to OFF first, then back to ON. Half-throwing it to ON without clearing to OFF is the most common reason a maintenance tech reports the breaker will not reset.
12) How are Eaton BRP GFCI breakers packaged for a job with a lot of circuits?
They ship one per shelf carton, so ordering quantity gets you individually cartoned breakers rather than a bulk pack. Each breaker is about .45 lb, which is worth knowing if you are pricing a panel changeout with thirty or forty of them going onto a truck.
