Three ways to buy the same 4 inch round steel pan. TP267 comes with knockouts and built-in cable clamps, so NM cable is secured right at the box. TP269 is knockouts only, which is what you want when you're bringing in armored cable or conduit and landing your own connector. TP301 ships as a kit: an NM snap-in connector, mounting screws and a protective cover. If you're doing a straight romex ceiling fixture, TP267 or TP301 saves you a connector; if you're feeding it with MC or EMT, take TP269.
2) How deep does the Crouse-Hinds 4 inch ceiling pan need to go into the ceiling?
Half an inch. The pan measures 4 in by 4 in with a 1/2 in depth, so it recesses into a shallow notch rather than needing a full box cavity. That's the reason to reach for a pan instead of a round box: old plaster ceilings, concrete decks with furring, or anywhere there's a joist or duct right behind the fixture location and you can't get depth.
3) Can I hang a ceiling fan from a Crouse-Hinds TP267 ceiling pan?
No. A ceiling pan like the TP267 is a shallow steel outlet pan for lighting outlets, not a fan-rated support. Ceiling fans require a box or brace listed and marked for fan support. Use a fan-rated box or a ceiling fan brace bar for that opening and keep the pan for light fixtures.
