1) What is a Crouse-Hinds TP648 concrete box plate used for?
The TP648 is a 4 inch square steel cover plate for a concrete-tight box, and it comes punched with (3) 1/2 inch and (2) 3/4 inch end knockouts so conduit can land at the plate instead of the box body. It is a cover, not a box: you are buying the steel plate that closes a 4 inch box in a concrete pour. Rated for ordinary, non-hazardous locations.
2) What is the difference between Crouse-Hinds TP648 and TP649?
Knockouts. The TP648 is the no-stud version with (3) 1/2 inch and (2) 3/4 inch end knockouts already punched, so you can bring conduit into the plate. The TP649 is flat and blank, no openings at all, for closing off a 4 inch box you are not running raceway into. Same 4 inch square steel plate either way. If the conduit runs are going into that box, order the 648; if the box is being covered and left, order the 649.
3) Is the Crouse-Hinds concrete box plate approved for a hazardous location?
No. It is rated for ordinary, non-hazardous locations only. For a classified area, Class I or Class II, you need a box and cover assembly listed for that division, not this plate.
4) Do I need the stud version instead of the Crouse-Hinds TP648?
The TP648 is the no-stud plate. If your installation calls for a mounting stud on the plate to carry a device or fixture, the 648 is not that part. Order it when the plate is doing nothing but closing the box and taking conduit entries.
