Crouse-Hinds GUAT14 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can a Crouse-Hinds GUAT condulet be used in a Class I Division 1 area?
Yes. The GUAT Series conduit outlet box carries an NEC hazardous rating of Class I, Division 1, so it is built for areas where flammable gases or vapors can be present under normal operating conditions. It's also built to NEC/CEC standards, which matters if you're specifying for a Canadian site as well as a US one.
2) What hub sizes does the GUAT T-shape condulet come in?
Hub sizes run 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch, each paired with a cover opening size. The full lineup is GUAT14 (1/2 in, 2 in opening), GUAT16 (1/2 in, 3 in), GUAT24 (3/4 in, 2 in), GUAT26 (3/4 in, 3 in), GUAT36 (1 in, 3 in), GUAT37 (1 in, 3-5/8 in), GUAT47 (1-1/4 in, 3-5/8 in), GUAT49 (1-1/4 in, 5 in), GUAT59 (1-1/2 in, 5 in) and GUAT69 (2 in, 5 in). Match the hub to your conduit trade size first, then pick the opening you need for pulling and device access.
3) Why are two sizes listed for each GUAT part number, like 3/4 inch and 3 inch?
The first number is the conduit hub trade size and the second is the cover opening. GUAT26, for example, takes 3/4 inch conduit and has a 3 inch opening. Same hub size can come with different openings, so 3/4 inch conduit is available as GUAT24 with a 2 inch opening or GUAT26 with a 3 inch opening. Pick the hub for your raceway and the opening for how much room you need inside to make up conductors.
4) I need a T condulet for 2 inch rigid conduit in a hazardous area. Which GUAT do I order?
GUAT69. That's the 2 inch hub version, and it comes with a 5 inch cover opening, the largest in the range. It's the top of the GUAT size lineup, so if your run is larger than 2 inch trade size this series won't cover it.
5) Does the GUAT condulet come with a cover or do I order that separately?
The cover is part of the assembly. The GUAT Series is supplied as a conduit outlet box with cover, so the sealing surface and the box are matched out of the box.
6) Can I mount a GUAT condulet outdoors in a refinery yard?
Yes, within what NEMA 3 covers. The enclosure is rated NEMA 3, which is protection against falling dirt, rain, sleet and ice formation, so it holds up in an exposed outdoor location. It is not a submersion or washdown rating. The Feraloy iron alloy body is what gives it the corrosion and mechanical strength for a refinery or chemical plant environment.
7) Will a GUAT work for a Class I Division 2 area, or is it overkill?
It works. Equipment listed for Class I Division 1 is acceptable in Division 2 areas of the same gas group, so a GUAT can be used in either. Plenty of facilities standardize on the Division 1 body across the whole plant so stores only carries one fitting and nobody has to check the area classification drawing before grabbing one off the shelf.
8) What is Feraloy iron alloy and does it hold up better than aluminum in a chemical plant?
Feraloy is Crouse-Hinds' iron alloy used for hazardous location bodies, chosen for corrosion resistance and mechanical strength in harsh industrial service. That's the whole construction of the GUAT body. For plants handling solvents, paints, or process chemicals where an aluminum body can be attacked, the iron alloy is the reason this fitting gets specified.
