Crouse-Hinds LBY35 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use an LBY elbow in a hazardous or classified location?
No. The LBY is rated for ordinary, non-hazardous locations. A Class I or Class II area needs an explosionproof conduit body with a listed cover and sealing arrangement, not a service-entrance elbow. For an ordinary commercial or industrial run, the LBY is the right family.
2) What is the difference between an LBY pulling elbow and a regular LB conduit body?
A standard LB gives you a removable cover so you can pull and access the conductors at that point. The LBY is a 90 degree pulling service-entrance elbow: it is used where the conductors are pulled through and the fitting is not intended as a splice or junction point. Pick the LBY on a service-entrance turn where you need the direction change and the pull; pick an LB style body where you need working access at the bend.
3) Is Feraloy iron alloy going to rust on an outdoor service entrance?
Feraloy iron alloy is the standard Crouse-Hinds Condulet body material and it ships with a protective finish for corrosion resistance in normal outdoor service. It holds up on a typical exterior wall run. In a coastal, wash-down, or chemical environment, a copper-free aluminum or PVC-coated body is the better call, and that is a different fitting family, not a finish option on the LBY.
4) Does the Crouse-Hinds LBY meet code for a residential service entrance?
The LBY is built to NEC and CEC requirements and is intended for service-entrance use, which is why it shows up on residential meter-to-panel runs as well as commercial and industrial power distribution. The inspector will still want the fitting sized and supported to the conduit run in front of them, but the fitting itself is a code-compliant service-entrance elbow.
5) I need to turn a service conduit 90 degrees at the wall without bending it. What fitting do I order?
An LBY 90 degree service-entrance elbow does that job. It threads onto rigid or IMC on both ends and makes the direction change as a cast Feraloy iron body, so you are not fighting a field bend or stacking two couplings. Order it in the trade size of the conduit run: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4 or 1-1/2 inch.
6) How do I read the Crouse-Hinds LBY part numbers when I'm ordering for a whole building?
The number after LBY is the size code, not the inches. LBY15 is 1/2 inch, LBY25 is 3/4, LBY35 is 1, LBY45 is 1-1/4 and LBY55 is 1-1/2. If you are standardizing across a property, order by that code so every unit gets the identical fitting, and note that trade size is the only option on the LBY, so there are no finish or cover suffixes to specify.
