1) Can I use this Crouse-Hinds clamp connector on liquidtight or flexible metallic tubing?
No. It is built for FMC, standard flexible metal conduit (Greenfield), and the clamp is sized to that. Liquidtight flexible metal conduit needs a liquidtight connector with a sealing gland and O-ring to keep the raceway watertight, and FMT takes its own fitting. Using this one on liquidtight gives you no seal at the fitting.
2) Is this connector insulated, and do I need an insulated throat for my wire?
Non-insulated. The throat is bare malleable iron, so if your installation calls for an insulated throat, which is common on larger sizes and where the inspector wants conductor protection at the fitting, you need either an insulated-throat version of the fitting or a separate insulating bushing on the box side. The tradeoff is that the uninsulated metal body carries grounding continuity straight through the connector.
3) Can I use this Crouse-Hinds fitting in a hazardous or classified area?
No. It is rated for ordinary and non-hazardous locations only. A Class I or Class II area needs a fitting listed for that classification, and a clamp-type FMC connector is not it.
4) When should I use a 90 degree FMC connector instead of a straight one?
Use the 90 when the flex has to turn immediately at the box and there is no room to sweep it, tight to a wall, above a ceiling grid, or into the back of a panel with limited clearance. A straight connector plus a bend in the flex needs several inches of run to make the same turn without kinking. The angled body makes the turn inside the fitting instead.
5) Will this Crouse-Hinds connector maintain equipment grounding through the conduit?
Yes. The body is malleable iron and non-insulated, so the metal path from the flex through the fitting into the box is continuous. That said, FMC is only permitted as an equipment grounding conductor under limited length and ampacity conditions, so on longer runs or larger circuits you still pull a separate ground.
6) Does the Crouse-Hinds malleable iron FMC connector meet code for a commercial job?
It is built to NEC and CEC standards for ordinary, non-hazardous locations, which covers typical commercial and industrial raceway work, panel whips, motor connections and light fixture drops. For anything classified, wet, or requiring an insulated throat, spec a different fitting.
7) I need to standardize FMC connectors across a facility. Does one part number cover all my flex sizes?
No single number covers the range. It is one catalog number per trade size across 3/8 inch through 3 inch, so a standardization list runs 724, 736, 738, 739, 740, 741, 742, 744 and 745. All nine share the same malleable iron, non-insulated, clamp-type 90 degree construction, so the installation method and the grounding behavior are identical up and down the range.
8) Does the clamp on this connector damage the conduit or the wire when tightened?
The clamp uses Plastisol grips, a coated gripping surface rather than a bare steel jaw biting the spiral. It clamps onto the outside of the flex, so it holds without threading, and the conductors are pulled after the fitting is made up.
9) Why choose malleable iron over a die cast zinc FMC connector?
Malleable iron takes wrench torque and impact without cracking, which matters on larger trade sizes and where the fitting is in a spot that gets knocked, industrial plant, mechanical rooms, exposed runs. Die cast bodies are lighter and cheaper but are more prone to fracture when overtightened. On a 2 or 3 inch flex where you are really pulling on the locknut, the iron body is the reason to buy this one.
