1) What size conduit do the Crouse-Hinds XJG expansion couplings come in?
The XJG Series expansion coupling is stocked from 3/4 inch through 4 inch trade size: 3/4 (XJG24), 1 inch (XJG34), 1-1/4 inch (XJG44), 1-1/2 inch (XJG54 HDG), 2 inch (XJG64 HDG), 2-1/2 inch (XJG74 HDG), 3 inch (XJG84) and 4 inch (XJG104 HDG). Order the coupling to match the trade size of the run it splices into, not to the movement you need. Every one of those carries 4 inches of movement, and at 3 inch there is also an 8 inch movement version, the XJG88 HDG.
2) How much movement does a Crouse-Hinds XJG expansion coupling allow?
Four inches of total conduit movement on every trade size from 3/4 inch up to 4 inch. That is the travel the coupling absorbs as the run expands and contracts, so it is set at installation with the slip section positioned for where the structure sits at that temperature, not run all the way home. If a single run needs more than 4 inches, the 3 inch XJG88 HDG doubles it to 8 inches of movement.
3) Can I use an XJG expansion coupling on EMT, or is it rigid conduit only?
Both. The XJG Series is built for rigid and IMC conduit and for EMT, so one fitting covers a run whether it is threaded rigid or thinwall. The spec sheet lists the conduit type as Rigid/IMC and the series is described for Rigid/IMC and EMT.
4) Can I install a Crouse-Hinds XJG expansion coupling in a hazardous or classified area?
No. The XJG expansion coupling is rated for ordinary, non-hazardous locations only. For a Class I or Class II classified area you need a fitting listed for that classification, so do not substitute this one into a hazardous location run.
5) Does an expansion coupling maintain the equipment grounding path, or do I need a bonding jumper?
Plan on an external bonding jumper. An expansion coupling has a sliding joint by design, and a sliding joint is not a reliable equipment grounding conductor path. The XJG is steel and NEC/CEC compliant as a fitting, but where the metal raceway is being used as the equipment grounding conductor, the code requires the expansion fitting to be bonded around. Bond it with a jumper sized to the circuit and lugs at each side of the coupling.
6) I have a 3 inch conduit run crossing a building expansion joint. Which XJG do I order?
For a structural expansion joint at 3 inch trade size, the XJG88 HDG is the one to look at: it is the 3 inch coupling with 8 inches of movement, hot dip galvanized. Building joints move more than a straight thermal run does, and the standard 4 inch movement 3 inch couplings (XJG84 in zinc-plated steel, XJG84 HDG galvanized) may not cover the designed joint travel. Check the joint's rated movement against the coupling before you commit.
7) Is the hot dip galvanized XJG coupling worth it over the plain steel one for an outdoor run?
For anything outdoors, on a rooftop, in a parking structure or at a building expansion joint that sees weather, take the hot dip galvanized version. Both are steel; the HDG suffix is the difference, and it is the corrosion barrier. Plain steel is stocked at 3/4 inch (XJG24), 1 inch (XJG34) and 1-1/4 inch (XJG44), with a zinc-plated 3 inch (XJG84), and those suit dry interior runs. The HDG couplings run 3/4 inch through 4 inch, so galvanized is available in every size.
8) Does the XJG expansion coupling handle side-to-side offset, or only in-and-out movement?
Straight axial travel only. The XJG absorbs 4 inches of expansion and contraction along the length of the conduit. Where a joint also shifts laterally or shears, an expansion coupling on its own is the wrong fitting; that condition calls for a combination expansion and deflection fitting instead.
9) What is the difference between the XJG couplings ending in HDG and the ones without?
HDG is the hot dip galvanized finish. XJG24 and XJG24 HDG are both 3/4 inch couplings with 4 inches of movement; the HDG carries the galvanized coating and the plain catalog number is bare steel. 10) Do I need an expansion coupling on a long straight conduit run, or can I skip it?
Long exterior metal runs and any run crossing a structural joint need one. Steel conduit grows and shrinks with temperature, and without a place to absorb it the run pushes on boxes, cracks fittings and buckles. The XJG gives that run 4 inches of travel to move into. On short interior runs at stable temperature, it is generally unnecessary. Base the count on the temperature swing across the run and the joints it crosses.
