1) What trade sizes does the Crouse-Hinds EHC service entrance cap come in?
The EHC aluminum service entrance cap runs from 1/2 inch up through 4 inch trade size: EHC1 (1/2"), EHC2 (3/4"), EHC3 (1"), EHC4 (1-1/4"), EHC5 (1-1/2"), EHC6 (2"), EHC7 (2-1/2"), EHC8 (3") and EHC10 (4"). Order by the trade size of the conduit riser it caps, not by conductor size. A typical 200A residential riser in 2 inch conduit takes the EHC6; a 100A riser in 1-1/4 inch takes the EHC4.
2) Is the Crouse-Hinds EHC a clamp type or a threaded service entrance cap?
Clamp type. The EHC clamps onto the outside of the conduit rather than threading onto the male end, so it works on a riser whose threads are damaged or on a cut length with no threads on it at all. If the job spec calls for a threaded hub cap that screws onto a field-cut and threaded rigid nipple, this is the wrong style and you want a threaded entrance cap instead.
3) Can a service entrance cap be used in a hazardous or classified location?
Not this one. The EHC cap is rated for ordinary, non-hazardous locations only. On a site with a Class I or Class II classified area, a fuel canopy, a paint area, a grain handling building, that area needs fittings listed for that class and division. Everything outside the classified boundary can still take the EHC.
4) Does the Crouse-Hinds EHC entrance cap meet code for a residential service drop?
The EHC is built to NEC and CEC requirements, so it satisfies the code for both US and Canadian jobs. It goes at the top of the mast or riser to bring the utility drop conductors into the conduit while keeping rain out, and the drip loop is formed below the cap on the outside. The cap itself does not make the connection to the utility; that splice is made by the serving utility at the drop.
5) What is the difference between a service entrance cap and a weatherhead?
They are the same fitting. Weatherhead, service head, entrance cap, and mast cap all describe the part that terminates the top of a service riser and lets the overhead conductors in without letting water down the conduit. If a spec sheet or an inspector calls for a weatherhead on a 2 inch mast, the EHC6 is that part.
6) Do I need to order anything else with a Crouse-Hinds EHC cap to finish the riser?
The cap covers the top of the conduit and nothing else. The riser conduit, the straps or mast bracket holding it to the wall, and the conductors are separate. Because the EHC is a clamp style, it does not need a threaded hub or a locknut at that end, which is one fewer piece on the order compared to a threaded cap.
7) Will an aluminum entrance cap corrode on a coastal or steel conduit installation?
The EHC body is aluminum die cast, which holds up outdoors and is the standard material for a service riser cap. Two things to watch on the install: in salt air, keep the aluminum out of standing water and give it a clean seat on the conduit, and where the cap clamps to galvanized rigid steel you have dissimilar metals in contact, which is normal practice for this fitting but is a spot worth checking on a coastal maintenance walk.
8) Can I use one entrance cap for a whole apartment building or do I need one per meter?
One cap goes on each riser. On a multi-unit property with a single mast feeding a meter stack, that is one EHC sized to the mast. Where each unit has its own riser to its own meter, each riser gets its own cap. Sizes are available across the range from 1/2 inch to 4 inch, so a property standardizing on one riser size can buy a single part number for the whole portfolio.
